No... that's cool. Need to hear it! We'll be sure to when we saddle her up again. Would you pull it up so that there is ~still~ air under it after tightening it?

my empty saddle rises in the back too esp with longing. Okie gives it a "woosh" sound. Never seems to bother him though.

When I saw that this blanket raised I mentioned that I didn't need to raise it up any more but the trainer said I still needed to because even the contour came press the withers.

Yep. That's how I do it. It is surprising how after riding awhile it will settle back down. After a couple of hours, lots of times I'll loosen the cinch and pull it back up again.

Yeah, my pads after awhile all have a raised place but I still pull it up to the top of the swell, and then check it throughout a ride.

I want to hear what we should do to make it comfortable... don't think you are harping at all. The pads for western stuff are so much stiffer than in English, and the fits different enough, that I need the advice!

You can't see it in the pics on the horse, but I just took these. Bay's pad is actually cut away so there is no pad over the wither. The mare's is on top of it in this pic, and has a built-in rise to it. So should there be air visible under it when tight or just the ability to feel under it without pressure?

You can also see on Bay's pad the sewn in extra pad to fill in under his back.

I've never seen one like ecurbh's. That's pretty cool. That should be enough. As long as it's not pulled tight, which I bet that one won't. May have to look into one of those next time I need a pad.

I like that fits the contour of her back instead of kindof bridging from front to back like the flat pads do until the saddle is on... but we'll still make sure it isn't tight on her wither riding. ecurbh's reading your posts.

New pads can be a pain in the butt, because they are so stiff. A pad usually lasts me about 2 years. Just about the time it's broke in will for ME, it's wore out for the horse. I usually know it's time to get a new one because the hair back by the hips start breaking off., Then I know the cush is gone:)

All the stuff is so expensive.... And I thought I had everything! But then we get a second horse, and now we need ~two~ lunge lines ;~D and new pad, and new halter and lead rope.... Least she came with a serviceable blanket for this year, anyhow.

It looks to me, like the saddle is too far back. I have a saddle that is similiar. It's a Big Horn, leather, and cordova. The cinch seems to be too far back, from her elbow, from the picture. You will get that space, in the back, when moving, but that looks a little extreme. Try moving the pad/saddle forward, if you can, and see what happens.

Just my 2 cents.

Yes, my riding horses were gaited, walking/racking. Not sure what the answer is to your question but FrogInABlender should know.

Not talked to her in a few days. I suspect that with all the new horse pictures on this thread lately that she may be looking at new horses herself..... : )

Her whither is far back, and the saddle seemed to want to rest where we put it, but we'll look at how it might sit better!
