Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I think a major difference for us, is that I already wrote the check. This is an agreement to buy ~unless~ something goes wrong, not a 'let's test and see if we want to buy'.
Here's what she brought, and I think the terms are fair.
This agreement is for a Horse, Mustang/Half-Arab mare hereby known as Cyn.
It is agreed between ______________ as seller and _____________ as buyers.
It is agreed that the sale price is $1,200 and a check has been written, and will be held for one week. It is also agreed on a one-week trial, beginning on Sunday October 3rd, 2004. After the week trial, if it is decided that Cyn is acceptable, the check will be deposited.
In the event of the death of the horse in the buyer's care, the check will be cashed.
In the event the horse is injured and requires veterinary care, the buyer agrees to pay all expenses.
After purchase is completed, seller will mail registration papers.
Signed by all three of us.

On another subject, our mountain is erupting again! Nice of her to do this on such nice clear days. It would have lost it's visual appeal if it had blown up before the fog lifted! :~D

I haven't got to see any news yet today. I'll have to go see if they're showing pictures, I think that looks cool.

My farrier who shoes for "those People":) said they have tried another horse since Harley. It was an already trained jumper. $11,000. But the kid was afraid of it, and wasn't riding it very well, my farrier had mentioned the last time he was here that he thought the kid was afraid of horses. But they went ahead and had a vet check done. It came up navicular.....He also said they are in the process of building an indoor arena for the kid to jump in.....I'm beginning to get the impression they have HIGH expectations for this kid. Just amazes me the reasons they passed on Harley, especially given that the kid was so comfortable riding him, and had jumped him. Yeah he wasn't a finished jumper, but he was doing it.

So, you already to ride your horse? Never fails that new ones get some kind of ding that keeps you from riding them when you're really pumped up to ride. That has happened to us soooooo many times.

I'm looking forward to it. For the time being though, I'm enjoying just being around her and developing a bond with her.
I have to wonder if the jumper really even had Navicular, or just the vet saying "he has the kind of conformation (four legs and a hoof at the end) that might get Navicular".
BTW.... The Bute went down real easy. She's an easy mare to medicate! And that is nice. And also BTW, in all of ecurbh's conversations, my Bay and the pony have become, "the other horses".

I wondered about the same thing with that vet. He could be milking them for a few more pre purchase vet checks. What a slime. I saw him in the grocery store the other day, he was at the end of an aisle reading the menu above my head. I just stood there and stared holes in him, trying to decide if I should say something:). He noticed me and gave me a funny look like "what". I was afraid once I started, I wouldn't be able to stop. Still to fresh. And besides what good would it do.
I just like to know tho, how common this practice is. I have no problems with someone wanting a vet check to see if the horse is healthy NOW. But to try to predicte future problems seems like something that is dead wrong, and should not be allowed. Every horse is going to have problems especially as they get older. I just don't get this concept. I'd have never agreed to the check up if I had known that was part of it.
I feel people are entitled to a vet check, especially when spending that kind of money. But I'm not sure how to go about it if it's asked again. Even if I go and state what the vet can tell them what's to keep them from calling him later for the "predictions".

I think you should at least have the right to be present. And I would think the owner would have critical information I would want if I was the vet.
I don't see any particular reason to vet check this one.... But if anything comes up we will.
The vet just called, I explained everything as I saw it. He said it sounds like Rocky strained or sprained his stifle joint. He said let him off till Monday, then check to see if he reacts to pressure on his hip or flank. If so bring him in, but even if he has done that, and is still sore Monday, it's not real "serious" or he would be on three legs. Sounds like one of those things that could just take awhile. Even if he is fine Monday, Rocky is now on a month vacation. I've heard stifle injuries can be really bad, so I want to make sure we get him back totally before pushing him. With winter coming, this won't be that big of a deal to do. When we start him back we'll just go slow.

You know, I've never had one vetted before buying. Maybe after my experience with Rusty I should:), but I knew when I got him, he wasn't in the best of health. I don't know if they could have told he would have a sweating problem. I looked at his feet and knew he was sound there, he was just thin and wormy. Needed some TLC.
I just don't like the practice of trying to predicte their future health based on confirmation, etc...I don't think that is a reasonable practice on a vets part. I've talked to several people and vets since, and they all say the same as I. So this guy is either an arrogant pompus know it all, lots of book knowledge and no common sense, or he has a good scam going:)

If I were getting one that was middle aged, I might... but even then, they would be looking at outward signs of lameness that I can see myself. That is another reason to keep the horse a week as a test... to see that they aren't covering some lameness with Bute (heh, I'm the one that Buted this mare), or covering attitude problems with a tranquilizer, as was the case in the pony.
They wouldn't be able to see arthritis, or Navicular, or other old-age-and-use kinds of injuries that aren't visually apparent, not without xray or further testing.
If there were a horse in recovery from a known condition, I might ask the vet what the expected recovery plan should be. But in the absence of any stand out issue with this mare, I am not sure what I would have them look ~for~.

Well, I think I'm going to do some housework before I ride. I can usually always get the gumption up to ride, but not clean house:). If I get the house clean, it will be nice to go ride and come home to a clean house, and not come home tired and have to look at the mess.

GRRR. I need to get a second job lol. Just went to pick up Eddies saddle and some stuff I ordered. She bought me a bit that may kind of work like the one you posted. It's a Robart Pinchless Bit. Rotates independantly. It says the riders instructions will be perfectly clear and without confusion. Oh yea! A miracle!. Big letters...TRY IT! bOTH YOU AND YOUR HORSE WILL LIKE IT! I was reading this off in the line at Burger King and Eddie tried to briddle me:')
