Looking for software in vein of System Mechanic, Tuneup Utilities 2004, etc. but better

Hello,

Would anyone be willing to recommend a software download that can optimize my hard drive? I'm looking for something that will catch and delete old, unwanted junk files, etc.

I know I can get my PC running at least 50% faster than it is now. It's "only" two years old.

I've tried System Mechanic and TuneUp Utilities 2004 and thought they were so-so. Is there a better software that I'm missing?

Many thanks for any info.

Kind Regards...

Posted this in chat. My apologies if this shows up on the general board. Not my intention, of course.

I'll tell you what I use:

(1) "Evidence Eliminator" (I can't help the name). The best utility for scrubbing cookies and trash from your PC.

(2) Ad-Aware for removing spyware, plus SpyBot Search and Destroy.

(3) Norton's good old reliable Speed Disk for defragging. A decent alternative is O&O Software's Defrag Pro.

(4) Registry First Aid. Finest Kind.

(5) Norton's good old "Win Doc". I usually run it FIRST, and let Registry First Aid clean up what it misses.

(6) IMPORTANT: Get a good back-up product and USE IT REGULARLY. My personal favorite is NOVABACK, by NovaStor Corp.

Them's my 2 cents.

Don't forget (as I almost did): get a decent firewall. I use Zone Alarm Pro. Also Don't Forget a decent anti-virus and keep it updated. I was a longtime fan of McAfee until their latest release cost me a day of effort and I could never install it.

They drove me to Norton, so now I use Norton anti-virus.

Try VCOM's System Suite, has a firewall, Power Desk and I think Trend's anti virus, all in one package.
