Roosevelt student remains jailed in schoolmate's murder

Alexander Baquera, an 18-year-old Roosevelt High School student, was charged over the weekend in the murder of his classmate, 16-year-old Chris Barnes, a Lubbock County Jail officer said.

Baquera remained at Lubbock County Jail Sunday evening in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Police said Barnes and Baquera began arguing in the parking lot of Tinsel Town movie theater, 2535 82nd St., after the Roosevelt High School football game Friday night.

Witnesses said the fight ended and Barnes and a friend began driving away. Baquera then returned to their truck and punched Barnes, who was in the passenger's seat, on the right side of his head.

The driver said Barnes complained about a headache but did not want medical treatment. He later stopped breathing and was taken to University Medical Center, where he died early Saturday.

Barnes was a sophomore at Roosevelt High School.

Funeral services for Barnes will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Roosevelt First Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Magee officiating. Burial will follow at Idalou Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of White Funeral Home of Idalou.

Survivors include his mother, Deneise Barnes of Lubbock; father, David Barnes of Abilene; stepfather, John Joyner of Lubbock; two brothers, Anthony Barnes of Azle and Justin Norman of Lubbock; and grandparents Charles and Joyce Barnes of Lubbock, Mildred Scott of Lubbock and Billy and Joan Norman of Peaster.

The family suggests memorials to Habitat for Humanity, 2910 Ave. N, Lubbock 79411.

Why? Tempers flare everywhere, including Lubbock. Unfortunately, Alexander Baquera is learning the hard way that actions have consequences.

I know, but it's shocking when you open up FRep and see news like for the first time.
