Absolutely. That's another pitfall that contemporary filmmakers fall into when adapting novels...they figure that if it isn't happening NOW, and with twentysomething bodywaxed robots starring, it isn't going to be good.
My fantasy movie company would correct this mistake. I'd also begin making FAITHFUL adaptations of the Dirk Pitt series, and possibly even some novels by Carl Hiassen or Tim Dorsey.
By "faithful", I mean faithful to the SPIRIT of the source material. One of the biggest diappointments in film I ever saw was the Demi Moore "Striptease", based on Hiassen's novel. The novel was filled with references to political corruption in Florida, bad judges, and rotten pols. All done in a funny, off-the-wall manner. The film was about Demi's fake boobs.

Release Date: March 25, 2005 Genre: Action Time: NA MPAA Rating: NA Based on the bestselling series by Clive Cussler, Dirk Pitt takes on a plot that involves a strange epidemic sweeping through the Nile, an evil corporation trying to cover it up, and an assassination that leads back Abraham Lincoln. - - - - - -- -
not my original idea of Dirk Pitt, but I will try to adjust
and yes, Cussler wrote "Raise the Titanic!"

It always amazed me..You've got this great book franchise..sells millions, like clockwork..guaranteed success, and millions of guys dying to see it..so Hollywierd buys the rights, pays a bundle, then all these idiots sit around a big table, and ask themselves..OK we've got this sure-fire hit, with built in sequels. How can we screw it up? Exactly!

My novel "Enemies Foreign And Domestic" is going to it's third printing now. The first printing was 1,000 last August, then 2,000 more in November, and now another 2,000 the following August. Pretty good for a self-published novel with no outside promotion. I'm in it for the long haul; currently I'm writing "Domestic Enemies," the sequel to EFAD.

"Cape Fear" was made into two big budget Hollywood hits, one starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, the other starring Nick Nolte and Robert Deniro, if I recall correctly. Both are pretty terrific, real nail-biters. McDonald's book was not called Cape Fear though, I think it was called The Executioners.

I saw it with the "Not FR's Travis" but it still grabbed my attention.
Obviously, I'm the number one fan of the master, the late great John D. McDonald.
