In this very important time in the run-up to the election ... can I please have your dog food recommendations?

It's time to put our almost-two-year-old Vizsla on a good maintenance diet. She is not overweight in the least, gets plenty of exercise, up to two hours a day. But the growth blends are too rich in some nutrients for mature dogs. Please give me your recommendations. We have been giving her Eagle Valley, which is a great (expensive) food. We are not looking to spend extravagantly on the new food necessarily, but on the other hand we are not going to make this decision based on cost. (Come to think of it, when did we ever make a pet decision based on saving money in our home? Never.) Thank you, dog-loving Freepers.

We feed our three labs whatever is on sale. But, I think ScienceDiet has a diet dog chow.

Purina Pro Plan.
It's first ingredient is meat unlike others that use meal. All-natural ingredients, readily available, and they use most of the food (their poop is small).
Poop!

Something with Lamb and Rice...it's good for the old colon. Nothing better during this election cycle than a dog with a healthy colon!!!

The Dread Boston Salty has eaten Science Diet and Iams for most of his life, and when we can't get those (vet closed, PetSmart closed), Purina One is darn near as good.
Our vet has told us that Salty's in phenomenal shape, except for being a 27-pound Boston terrier born of 15-pound parents. (Go figure.)

Science Diet. If its good enough for military dogs, its good enough for mine.

We use Purina Pro Plan Weight Control for our 6 year old Carolina Dog. It's easy to find, reasonably priced, not full of fillers and meals, and makes her poop less (and it's not soft and ewwy to pick up).

For what it's worth, our flying squirrels do not like Regal Rat.

Something with lots of onions. The dog's flatulence (and worse) are a perfect excuse/cover for your own indiscretions....

Eukanuba large breed. Or Science Diet. Whatever you choose, make sure you introduce it slowly. If you just outright switch, your dog might suffer some gastronomical problems.

You don't say where you live. Some of the regional brands are very good. The very best dog food I've tried is called Bil-Jac. It comes frozen and is rich in meat. You don't feed much. The dry variety is good too. Down from there are a lot of good brands. The worst brands are the cheap ones. They are mostly filler and will cause your dog to poop in large volume. When it comes right down to it, cheap dog food is anything but.

We're giving ours Canidae. We wanted a quality product with meat as the primary ingredient -- not corn or a meat "meal" (ex. lamb meal) which could be ground up bones, etc.
Vizla's are good dogs.

Is that your Vizsla? Incredibly handsome dogs, aren't they? One day, walking Roxie in a huge park here (near Pittsburgh), someone said, What kind of dog is that? Vizsla. What's that? came the next question (you probably get this all the time). Hungarian hunting dog, I said. She any good? the guy asked. I don't know, I said, there aren't that many Hungarians around here. It just popped out, and the two of us laughed out loud for a while. Meantime, Roxie was rooting around, looking for stuff--moles, rabbits, whales, whatever.

Jaxmax. I've got an old Lab and a young Chesapeake and they both do very well on this dog food.
It's expensive, but if you're a good conservative Republican, you've got the money. ;-)
