Ah, Grellis. It's not as simple as standing tall and saying to the cigarettes, "You Cannot Pass!"
Lots of the troops in my units, past and present, have done it - it's ruthless willpower, and little else.
Please tell me more about the Family Thread?
I have quit cold turkey twice. Once for six years and once for five years.
It is tough for the first 3 days and after that, it is psychological. I'm glad your husband is going to quit, too. It's too hard to do with another smoker in the house.
I started smoking again three years ago and would like to quit again. Good luck!
SOUNDS like a good thread idea : ) Grellis good luck I know you can do it and your kids will be so happy : )
Good luck, Godspeed.
Coffee, lots of coffee.
(I'll post my personal brewing instructions. Laugh about them when you can. Especially should you start with the cig crave 'shakes' my brother got the last time he quit.)
Darksheare's Coffee.
Brew under advisement and warning: Can cause coughing and exclamations of "That's horrible!"
In 12 cup drip percolator pot, fill to 6 cup mark with water.
In filter, put 6 heaping scoops of coffee.
Medium roast works best, just make sure it's a robust blend.
Found a maxwellhouse 'medium roast' that was rather anemic.
Put pinch of salt in filter, about as much as it would take to cover the surface of a dime with one even layer.
This keeps the coffee from tasting burned too quickly, it doesn't age well brewed this way.
Brew, recirculate if need be, usually not.
Add sugar and dairy creamer.
Creamora and coffeemate are not recommended unless you like the heart racing that Ranger Pudding gives.
That, and the nondairy creamer will give you both a headache and a buzz with the coffee.
One thing not mentioned was that they did use non-dairy creamer.
I usually put about 8 spoons of sugar in this stuff, it ends up being like Russian Kava, thick and sweet with that bitter overtone to it.
Oh, and I am NOT responsible for seeming demonic possession of the coffeepot, or the coffeepot ending up acting as if it has been damaged.
Be sure NOT to add creamora or coffeemate to the brew, unless you LIKE ranger pudding style heart racing.
When I brew that stuff for myself, I recirculate the stuff to brew a second time, but that's me for my own personal enjoyment, and it may wreck the coffeepot.
Don't forget the salt, it's important to the finished brew.
Go for it! You have nothing to lose but that awful smell! (Nothing personal, but I can smell a smoker when he walks past on the sidewalk outside my windows ... even if he's not smoking!)
I'll fast from something for you every day ... maybe even Freeping, once or twice :-).
Good luck. I am sure it will be very difficult.
I think you are very brave for going cold turkey.
You CAN do this!!!!
My father did after smoking 50 years.
It took a heart attack acaring him into making the decision to quit. I'm glad you are not waiting for that. You don't always get the chance to quit after a heart attack. Many times you just die.
How did he do it? He was in ICU 10 days. No cigarettes there! Then hospitalized another week. By then the worst of the physical withdrawl was over.
He still fights the cravings 13 years later. It's always worse after a meal. He channels the energy by getting up from the table quickly after eating and washing the dishes. By the time he is done the craving is gone.
We'll 'see' you when your self-imposed exile is over. Best wishes!
I quit "cold turkey" but I had a very good reason to do so.
My kids were taken by their dad. I went to college classes one day, and when I got back my family were gone! No note, no calls, nothing!
I was so distraught, I started smoking twice what I had been before. I bargained with God!! (you should never do this, you tend to put yourself in a bind that is impossible to get out of!!) I told him that I would quit smoking if he helped me find my babies and get them back!!
The day I went to pick up my kids (after 3 weeks of pure torture) I smoked my last cigarette 2 hours before I picked them up. I still had cigarettes, I just refused to smoke them. After 3 days of not smoking...I gave the rest of my cigarettes to a neighbor, along with my Zippo lighter.
Good luck grellis, I will keep you in my prayers!

Sorry I'm so late oming to your announcement - literally took the entire day off from the computer yesterday.
As you (and everyone else) know, I'm one of the vocal opponents of smoking restrictions and increased taxes - however I do not advocate anyone taking up the habit or quitting when they decide it is time. I have always been supportive of friends trying to quit and won't even smoke around them.
Most have done what you are doing and went cold turkey - the suggestions others have given for changing your routine are right on the money, as is taking up needle work of some type. As for the chewing gum being painful - use a straw, either a regular drinking straw or one of those drinkmixing ones.
There is stuff on the market called "Smokeaway"....it's supposededly all natural. The commercials for it are obnoxious, but the claim is that you are guaranteed to quit in 7 days. A woman I know started using it 3 weeks ago and after 3 days she didn't need it anymore and she hasn't had a single craving...........and she's a bartender in a place where nearly everyone smokes!!!!
The stuff isn't cheap - but you can get it in any major drugstore chain (Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreen's).....depnding on where you live it costs about the same as a carton or 2 of cigarettes.....it's about 40bucks.
However you do it I wish you all the best.
