I vividly remember when Nixon did the indefensible in office and the head of the then RNC at the time (pop quiz, can anyone name this brave man?) said to Nixon, you're toast, you don't have the votes. His name was George Herbert Walker Bush. One man with the courage of his convictions stood up to Nixon and did the right thing.
