Runner
Dawn's chill breath
drawn into my own,
Sweat and the dew
mix upon my brow,
Hitching pains in my chest,
cramping claws upon my legs,
the mind drives me on,
the burning in my limbs
feeding my fires within.
The mile drags on
and my breath is ragged now,
still my legs keep pumping,
my heart hammers thumping,
my mind begins to wander
and the rhythm breaks
with my stride.
With a snap, I wrench myself
back to the focus:
stretch out the stride,
swing the arms wide,
eyes on the line
and the goal.
But time is not my friend this day,
the race is won and lost
and the pain is doubled.

Runner by day
fancy dancer by night's light
trusty and valiant knight in broad light of day
father of the boy all the way
charmer of the ladies of romance
a runner by day
hardened sinew, sweat of brow
stay in shape -you know how
a warrior must be quick to leap
alert to obey all the orders of the day
Runner is a toughened man
but,
a gentle soul by the moon's lesser light.
