Legal music downloads?

I am about to dive in and get a cable modem, but right as we are about to, my wife starts in on the "I don't want you downloading any more music. I don't want you doing anything illegal". Arent there some programs that are actually legal now? I used to use Winmx because I was under the impression that it was one of the legal ones, but she asked me to remove it til we found out for sure.

TOPICS: Chit/Chat
KEYWORDS: download; legal; music; napster
I wouldn't even mind if I had to pay a small fee, but obviously free would be preferable. I just want one that I can assure my wife isnt going to get me thrown in jail :)

I knew someone who used morpheus years ago, but nowadays you couldn't pay me enough to use anything that is file sharing; morpheus, kazaa/lite, napster...none of it.

Viruses, trojans, worms....you are allowing someone to connect directly to your computer and vice versa (that's how you download stuff). If you do it, make sure you have all the latest patches, fixes, security packs, antivirus updated, a software or hardware firewall...I would be prepared for the worst. But thats just me - which is why I don't do it. Most of the PC's I fix for home based businesses are ones where they have allowed their teens to run kazaa and it trashed their computer.

Napster is all nice and legal now. You pay 99 cents per song for anything you DL.

You can listen to a brief excerpt from any song before you pay for it, just in case you're not certain it's the one you're really looking for.

The Internet Live Music Archive permits you to download lossless (i.e., true CD quality) audio files for live shows from hundreds of club bands, as well as virtually every Grateful Dead show. All postings are linked to a copyright permission from the artist permitting taping, posting and downloading.
