Corin, if you choose to get Master And Commander, let me recommend one of the "'splaining" reference books. Now wait a minute, nobody said there'd be homework...,may this ain't fer the beach either...

Lotsa history here, Master Dwarf ... what we consider to be the Napoleanic Wars were very different on water. Some of the accompaning books have maps; others, like this one, are full of history and fascinating trivia.
Someone once said that the Napoleanic Wars were the last gasp of the "pre-humanist" age. The barbarity and ignorance of the era --- and the nobility and capability --- are equally showcased. The science is atrocious, but the music is delightful. I'm frankly addicted to the historical period, and the Master and Commander books really illustrate the times in a way the more rigid Hornblower cannot.

Now wait a minute, nobody said there'd be homework...,may this ain't fer the beach either... Well, Captain Jack *does* pride himself in the education of the middies on board...like a big ol' Pappa bear, that one.
*sigh!*
Such a MAN!
