Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Let them pass! Let them pass!
(Note to dwarves, this is only meant figuratively)
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Just posted this on the horse thread..... slow day!
OK... scenes from around the campfire.... actually, it's too hot to build an actual campfire yet, but we sat out there and it's nice. I found ecurbh out there reading in the shade, and he already had both horses with him.
I don't know if you know this about Bay, but when we bought him 13 years ago for a friend of mine, the guy who owned him didn't ride at all. He had acquired Bay as settlement of a debt of some kind, let him live in the yard like a dog, living on the back porch and attending all the family barbecues, for the last three years. It shows, whatever we are doing, he's right in the middle of it.

He wants my coffee.... if he only had thumbs to pick up the mug.... ;~D

Oh yeah, and you shoulda let Bay have a taste of that coffee. He'd prolly just walk off afterwards. ;-)

Looked it up ... but I went right to it in the book.
It happened during a gunroom party aboard HMS Worcester, a farewell dinner for a bunch of chaplains. It's a memorable scene, in which Stephen makes an idiot of himself ... very funny!

You're not late. You're right on time. Hello.

As for training...we had a lot of periodic training, but usually (being AF), they had handy-dandy videos. Most were laughably bad, though. I remember the first-aid one in particular. Fake blood EVERYWHERE, and very badly acted out accidents. It was a hoot...The National Guard of the 1970s was even worse. We had Army training films of the 1950s. I slept through most of them, but the film on riot control was so funny, I stayed awake through the whole thing. It looked like it was produced by Saturday Night Live.
I'd give good money to have some of those lousy films on DVD. Except for the one on frostbite.

The horses have been back there since you guys left. Pulled all the bracken, and picked the apples they could reach.... just to be on the safe side we put up a big scary tarp over the apple tree so they won't go near it.
