LOL...As an Army Sergeant, I had the monthly task of training headquarters platoon soldiers on some military arcana or other (three fellow NCO's took the weekly training in rotation). I got tired of the map reading/call for fire/treat a wound carp* that was the staple of these events, and got on a military history kick for a while. I would describe, with maps and illustrations, some ancient battle, and attempt to draw lessons in tactics, reconnaissance etc. from it.

When I did Waterloo, my major source material was Les Miserables. Those of you who have read the whole thing know whereof I speak.

*Yes, carp. And don't you forget it :)

Oh, Master Dwarf! Asking me for a Heinlein reading list is dangerous!

I recommend three Heinlein books to start: Starship Troopers, The Past Through Tomorrow: Future History, and The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress.

Starship Troopers isn't very long, but I think it's the clearest and most straightforward introduction to Heinlein's philosophy and writing style; it's a clean, undecorated blade, bright and shiny and durable, and, oh, yeah, very sharp. This book is on the USMC's reading list because of the questions it makes you ask.

The Future History is a collection of shorter fiction (some short stories and a longish novella), perfect for the beach. It's an expansion of the Heinlein you meet in Starship Troopers, spread from his very first published science fiction short story, "Life-Line," to "Requiem," to my personal favorite, "If This Goes On ..."

The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress demonstates how to manage a modern revolution, and is a precursor in style and substance to much of Heinlein's later works --- eyes-wide-open realistic cynicism about the ways of the world, and competent, idiosyncratic, grown-up people hell-bent on changing said world into something better.

Yeah, that's the part I'm ashamed to say I didn't read very carefully...*blush*

As for training...we had a lot of periodic training, but usually (being AF), they had handy-dandy videos. Most were laughably bad, though. I remember the first-aid one in particular. Fake blood EVERYWHERE, and very badly acted out accidents. It was a hoot...

Interesting. I think I may have read some of that but didn't pick up the details as well as you describe. I also read something about Japan shipping a pair of ships with radioactive piles (a type of dirty bomb I guess) to the California coast in 1945, but the US Navy intercepted them, fortunately; Hitler also had developed a similar weapon for use against Britain via V2s but it was never used. Also, on the UFO thing, one thing that was kept from public knowledge during the war was Japanese use of balloon bombs as bioweapons. On this here are some interesting links:
