The Hobbit Hole XIII - Let them pass! Let them pass!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Let them pass! Let them pass!
(Note to dwarves, this is only meant figuratively)

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

hehehe... yah... that whole "free will" concept is a bugger sometimes.

Nevermind. :-)

I passed on the Lone Wolf and Cub definition of "dono" Bear provided and got this reply today:

It's a contraction of "daimyo" probably - samurai used to address their lord that way.

So I added "daimyo" as a keyword to my search and found this:

Days of the Kami

daimyo: head of a noble family line, lord.

danna: milord

-dono: suffix added as an honorific when referring to one's own lord

The Samurai's Primer

There are three forms of polite adress commonly used in Rokugan. An equal, or an inferior to whom one wishes to be polite, is adressed as (family name)-san, or (first name)-san if there are many people of the same family present. For a superior, the pattern is the same, except that the suffix is -sama. Finally, one's lord may also be adressed as "tono" ("lord"), or with the suffix -dono after his family name.

Interesting! Lone Wolf and Cub have any more along the lines of the above, Bear?

Saw one of those in the road today, LOL! There's this one part of the road at the bottom of the hill near the river where all the critters like to cross the road, so every few days there's a new roadkill there in almost the same spot. You'd think they'd learn!

Well... they do learn... but for each of them it is too late to pass on the information. :-)

I've remarked a few times lately that it has been ~years~ since I smelled skunk, and it used to be a fairly common occurance to catch a whiff of them or see/smell them in the road. I think they are pretty much gone from this area.

Not really, although there is an interesting sequence near the end of the story that I came across last night... Lone Wolf (Ogami Itto) is dealing with his sworn enemy, Lord Yagyu. At this point of the story, Ogami's clan has been disbanded and/or killed, and Ogami himself is an outlaw. A third person acting as an intermediary between Ogami and Yagyu refers to Yagyu as "Yagyu-sama", which is correct because Yagyu is the person's superior. But, this same person refers to Ogami as "Ogami-dono"; since Ogami is not a lord at this point, and was never this person's lord, to my mind the "very respected person" definition fits better.

But I'm no expert!

~shrugs~ They went wherever the rest of the critters go when too many people move in.

They are in heaven now. The management at heaven is terribly concerned that the guests will find it unheavenly and complain. ;~D

A few weeks ago there was a skunk smell every night outside my window for like 5 minutes, then fortunately it went away. Not sure what was going on there--never saw the critter, though I have seen 'em around on other occasions.

Interesting! How is that series, BTW? I've seen it in bookstores but never read it.

Surfing around here--this looks kinda useful:

From what I've seen of your area, it looks like there's enough wooded area to support skunks. If you have deer around, you can have skunks around.

Very good! One of the classics, as they say.
