Help! Viking Kitty Messed Up My Computer!

Posted on 06/28/2004 9:07:28 AM PDT by Not A Snowbird

Help, all you techies out there. Last night my cat sat on my keyboard (all 24 pounds of him). When I finally dislodged him, I discovered my screen display had rotated 90 degrees. I can't figure out what combination of keys he sat on to cause this, so I can't undo what he did.

Anybody out there know what to do? I'm working on a Dell with Windows XP. And please don't tell me to get a Mac, that would not be very helpful right now.

Just put your monitor on its side!

It may come to that!

It rotated left. This simply cannot stand!

Aahhh! Are you SURE it rotated left,
or did it just rotate right 3 times?

Seriously, I know dinky-do about computers, but my husband told me;

'When in doubt... restart!'

Try the menu/controls on the monitor itself.

You can try that but some monitors store their settings. You might want to go into the monitor setup screen (there should be a button on the monitor that says menu) then look for screen geometry or somthing like that.

If you send me the model of monitor you are using I could try and lookup the user guide for it.

Just a guess here, but are you sure it was the keys that did it? If he was on the keyboard, he may well have brushed against the controls on the monitor itself. Play with the knobs on the monitor itself and see if it fixes it.

I offer this because I worked at a credit collection agency, and at least 3 times a week someone came up to me with the "my computer is broken, it won't turn on!" problem. 70% of the time, the correct solution was to turn the brightness knob that they had somehow spun all the way down, up. The other 29% of the time was to plug it back in after they'd kicked the cord out of the wall.

It wasn't your cat. It's a computer virus secretly put out by the American Association of Chiropractors.

The exact same thing happened to my fiance.

Your fiance sat on your keyboard?

.......but the mouse isn't working too well right now....

There's the problem. The kitty was after the mouse........
(Sorry. The devil made me do it.)
I wish I could help but I've never seen a monitor act as you've described.

If you have an NVidia graphiocs card, there's a 'rotate screen "X" to the right/left' option in the NVidia settings menu.
Under NVidia setting icon on taskbar, if you have it -the icon looks like a whorled eye, right click and bring up the right click menu.
There will be an option called "rotation settings" towards the bottom of the list.
Your options within that menu are 0 degrees, 90, 180, and 270 degrees.
This only works if you have an Nvidia graphic card and have NVidia drivers.

Could also be in the video card settings. Right click on a clear area on the desktop and click properties. Screen rotation stetting could be in there.

Try rotating the cat 180 degrees and resitting him on the keyboard.

Let that be a lesson to you.
Your cat is probably surfing DU while you're away.
