ANKARA (Reuters) - Sixteen people were killed and 20 injured when an earthquake hit villages in the northeastern Turkish province of Agri overnight, Anatolian news agency said on Friday. Local governor Nurullah Cakir said he did not expect the death toll to rise. No further details were immediately available. Turkey is criss-crossed by seismic fault lines and frequently suffers earth tremors.
Nine people were killed and dozens injured when a quake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit Erzurum province in eastern Turkey in March. A huge quake in August, 1999, killed some 18,000 people in Turkey's industrialized northwest.
