Sorry to start your Monday with a bad story, but I figured I'd pass on what I experienced yesterday. A friend of mine was visiting for the weekend. She and I were heading out to do some shopping. We were on a state highway, heading west, just approaching the indian casino here. I was planning on stopping for gas at their gas station and was in the left lane to make the turn up ahead.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw what I perceived to be an SUV speeding past me on the right. As the vehicle pulled ahead, we both saw something white come flying out and land on the road. In my right side view mirror, we saw that it was a kitten. It was sitting in the middle of the road looking dazed. I slammed on my brakes, and because traffic behind me was stopped at the light back down the road, I was able to back up to get the cat. I was watching the poor little thing the whole time I backed up, yet when I got to where he was supposed to be, he was gone. I stood in the middle of the road to slow traffic down. We looked up and down the road, and off onto the areas on the side of the road for the kitten, but didn't see him(her).

At this time, a car stopped on the other side of the median. The man and older woman in the car had followed the person in the SUV and had observed the person, a woman, throw four kittens out of her car window onto the road. He had gotten her license plate number and was heading back to the casino and would call it in.

My friend and I went on to the gas station, hit the grocery store we had been headed to, and then had lunch. At lunch I told her that I was sorry now that I hadn't given the guy my name and phone numer so they could contact me as a witness. She suggested that I call the police when we got home to see if anyone had filed a report.

When we got home, I phoned the State Police barracks in the nearest town to the casino. Sure enough, someone had called the report into them. About 20 minutes later, the trooper who had taken the original report called me back. He said unfortunately, the person who had called in and given them the license number and reported the incident, never provided his name or contact number. Why is beyond me. The trooper advised me that they spoke to the woman who owned the license number and she denied throwing anything out of her vehicle. I will be going to the barracks on Wednesday to submit my own statement, but I doubt anything will be done about it. Without the written statement of the guy who saw her throw the four kittens out the window, followed her and took down her tag number, there isn't any case since neither I or my friend actually observed the woman throw the kitten out, nor could we provide any of her physical characteristics.

After working in prisons for 23+ years, I thought I'd seen just about everything. I'd heard of people doing horrible things like this, but never thought I'd ever see it. I wish we had been able to locate that kitten, and my heart breaks at the thought that he(she) and the other 3 kittens are out in the wilds. The guy who saw her throw all four kittens, said that he didn't see any of the kittens get hit and it appears that they all made it off the road okay, but what kind of life will they have? Chances of them surviving, being so small are slim to none in my estimation. I've been sick over this since it happened. I'll write in next Monday's thread to let you all know what the trooper told me.
