Not weird at all. People have asked relocation advice LOTS of times on FR. After wide-ranging discussions, people have even FReepmailed me to ask specifics about neighborhoods in metro Atlanta.
I myself have asked for input on various topics . . . both silly, like questions about my dogs and horses from other doggy and horsey people, and not so silly, like arguments to help my daughter with the pro-aborts in her (Episcopal) religion class, and advice from Catholics on FR about joining the Catholic church and finding a good orthodox parish. (You'll note that those two inquiries - though they took place over a year apart - are subtly related!)
Like the Jihad said, quit beating yourself up. (And I guess with a name like his, he oughtta know, right? < g > )
If it really is giving you a bad feeling, ask the Admin Mod (without his disclosing any confidential info) if the poster appears genuine or bogus. After all, if he's posting from a gummint computer in South Dakota, he'd not be much of a threat, would he? < big g >
Deep breaths, dear. Even if the original poster didn't take anyone seriously, various FReepers learned something about different places around the country that they might like.
It's all public information, anyway. You can get a quick overview from people here, but for details, anybody would have to contact local transportation authorities for schedules, routes, etc.
"But if I were thinking of relocating, the last thing I would do is become a member of a forum just to ask strangers for advice."
Especially a political forum. I sympathize as I think about things like that ALL THE TIME now, and I never did before. Oh, except back during some very bad periods of anxiety during my youth, when I used to worry that bombs were place under cars. But, even then I knew that was just crazy thinking, I wasn't ever really thinking there might actually be a bomb there.
But, look at it this way, maybe the person wasn't so new at all, maybe just a lurker who realized there are smart people from all over the country here, who are generous to give help when asked. I'd definately pose any question to the freeper brigade and have no doubt I'd get many good (and varied!) answers.
But, I think if really the person made NO responses, I'd let the mods know about it. Because after all, we are all fighters in the war on terror now.
I have called the FBI myself since 9/11, and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. I live in Hudson county, NJ and if that newbie is a terrorist I'd tell him to move here, cause he'd feel right at home. And our gov't is working to improve mass transit all the time.
