i never said anything about hiding anything from kids. but if you have adults getting drunk, or drinking to the point that they are oblivious to what is going on in their own house, then that i do disagree with. Whether xsSIL's friend didn't know or didn't care what was going on at her house, the bottom line is, xsSIL and i, would not permit our girls to attend a party at her house again, bc she clearly isn't paying attention. Several kids at that party, including the exchange student that the woman was hosting were in trouble with the COPS for drinking at a party the previous weekend. it is just totally irresponsible. Adults acting irresponsibly while drinking are setting that same tone for their kids. they will do what you DO, not what you say.

I'm in total agreement with you....what occurred at that party was irresponsible....allowing a bunch of teenagers to be off in another section of the house without adult supervision was also irresponsible, IMO.

ritilin threads on FR p*$$ me off too much. xsbrownie is medicated and hearing the horses a$$e$ on FR that opine that any kid on meds has lazy and overindulgent parents, raises my BP far too high...

You do have a very smart girl.

I am and have always been a firm opponent in the 21 age for consumption. I believe it has given too many "parents" a complacent attitude when it comes to alcohol and teens.

I have had this type of conversation with friends of mine that grew up in different areas and have found that those who grew up in areas with higher drinking ages than I did had entirely different teen experiences than I did. Some of the stories my husband tells of him and his friends being teens in Delaware are far different from those of us from NY or NJ. In fact some of the stories give me the chills.

i have no problem with a 21 yo drinking age. i grew up with it, and that is what it is in this area also.

Today I ripped out the old metal heat register, I took a hammer and banged it up and tossed it on the front porch. I suspect the husband will not dare to leave for work for fear what I will tear apart next. I am going to put in a new foyer floor. I love this remodeling stuff.

I know it does.......The only reason I brought it to your attention was because of the government involvement. That is what appalls me.

You are well aware that I know you are doing what is best for your child.......but that is the point - YOU are doing what is best for YOUR child.....some mindless government bubblehead has not taken that decision away from you, the parent.

Drinking age was 18 when I turned 18, then it changed to 21 before I reached 21. NY never can make up their minds....I never really got into drinking, I was married and pregnant at 20. Never looked back, never thought I missed anything...

21 is now nationwide. I grew up with 18.

I'm sorry, but if someone is mature enough to drive a car, vote for our leaders, enter into contracts, and give their life for our country, they are mature enough to have a beer.

Age of majority is either 18 or it is 21.....having somethings at different ages is utterly ridiculous.

i disagree, teenage driving is already a disaster and adding alcohol to the mix will make that even more deadly. maybe the age limits should be raised for other things, but 18 yos are NOT mature enough, by and large, to decide when they have had enough and to not drive or do stupid things PERIOD. there may be a handful, my niece included, who is 18 and born to teetotaling parents, but MOST 18 year olds are IMMATURE and alcohol doesn't make them any more so.

I think years ago when they first tried to clamp down on drunk driving that the laws lowering the drinking age were valid. Kids were not seeing any responsible drinking and they were vulnerable. Now we have had thirty years of drinking more responsibly, it's time to rethink some things. The times have changed.

NY was 18 when I was 18. It went to 19 2 weeks after my brother turned 19(1/1/82), the next year to 20 and the year after to 21..........by that point I was living in Delaware and was 24, so it never mattered to me.

I saw it.........but it has been one of the more benign of those threads I've seen in a long while.

I now have a tan and red foyer, current jam and baked scone, mmm yummy. Now I need a closet door, new register, new molding and new floor. You'd better wait and see my foyer before inviting me down. Then I have to decorate with new furniture. And I already have the paint for the dining room which is next.....RME.

I vaguely remember, we lived near the PA border and kids crossed both ways as laws changed back then.

Again, I don't disagree with you...........most especially when it comes to mixing alcohol with driving.

I just find it hypocritical 18yo olds are considered mature enough to make live/death decisions such as military enlistment but can't get a beer because they are not mature enough.

The cops around here just have to keep on top of the parties, they pull over the teens and catch 'em anyway.....
