Yes, this is the case. I am picking up a generic "linksys" SSID from time to time (probably my neighbor). But that SSID is unencrypted, whereas mine IS encrypted.

How did you solve this problem of the multiple SSIDs? Thanks.

Sorry if you already said so, but are you on a laptop? It could be that your laptop is turning your wireless card off as a power saving feature.

Just a shot in the dark. My wireless network works like a charm for a month, but every once in a while it gets a hiccup and I almost redo the entire thing.

I think the problem will disappear if we elect John Kerry as President (sarcasm)

Here's my 2 cents:
The frequency of your router is: 2.4GHz to 2.462GHz

Do you have another devices that are on that frequency -- portable phone, perhaps? The Mac people will set me straight on this, but I *think* the Mac Airport router is also transmitting on that frequency. Anyway, the point another router, phone, on that frequency could be giving you headaches.

you can try going to the settings and chose only use encrypted connection. My advise is call tech support and tell them the problem with the 2 connections and have them confiqure the settings.

Schnucki may be right. theres a flaw with Windows XP and some wireless setups.
#1. Make sure you have all critical updates installed.
If that does not fix it, turn off Wireless Zero Configuration.

We have a 2.4 GHz cordless telephone base unit that is about ten feet from the router. But we've had that telephone for awhile, and I never experienced network connection loss in the past, even with the telephone located where it is.

I guess I could test things by eliminating the phone as a factor. Question: When the cordless phone is "on hook" (that is, not being used) is the base unit still tramsmitting? If so, I probably shoud power off the telephone?

Thanks.

I use a mac with an Airport wireless base station. The 2.4ghz phone only interfered when the phone was in use

Good luck!

I'm having the same type of problem. If nobody picks up the wireless phone when it rings then I *might* lose my wireless connection on my computer. If someone does pickup and use the wireless phone then my computer freezes up completely. So I think the answer is that it is transmitting something, but not at quite as high a power.

Let me be the first to suggest: It's Bush's fault.

Man, you're quick! I blame it on global warming (which is, of course, Bush's fault.)

Hey.. Sorry to jump in "head first" here. On your problem, lower the WEP properties. OR, do away with them all together. I know this sounds foolish to do away with them. Next go into your router / firewall and configure your NIC properties for only your NIC (wireless card) to gain access to it. On laptop, open a DOS box, type ipconfig /all and there you will find your NIC number. I had the same thing happen on my XP Pro computers. AND Yes. I agree.... I Think BUSH got with GATES to make this problem !! *snicker*

You could try a system restore to a date you know was working.

I am using a Microsoft broadband MN520 wireless card, which communicates with a DLink DI 614+ wireless router. I run WEP encryption. Until a week ago, everything was fine. Now all of a sudden, the connection is lost literally every five minutes. In order to restore it, I must click on the icon of the connected computers (on system tray) and click on the "connect" button. It works for a few minutes, then drops again. I have tried a power reset of both the router and the cable modem. In addition, I try using the computer with the card literally five feet from the router. I still have the problem. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

rudy45's the one with the little problem. I am using Linksys products at home and have had the same trouble with new XP systems. XP likes to find all the other little networks in it's surrounding area and then give you a choice... Now if this was Kerry's fault then we would have only one SSID and that would be "demoncrat" The AP's would all be one big interconnected "Village"... :)

I have the same router. It drops every three hours, on the dot, then automatically reconnects. That's not so bad, except when you are doing something where you really notice if you temporarily drop the connection. Anway, my point is that I think it is a problem with this (cheap) router, I've researched my problem to no end and have seen a lot of complaints similar to yours. I also use a Linksys and never have had a similar problem, so I know it is not an inherent Windows XP problem with routers. So, you may not like this solution, but may I suggest: get a better router. Good luck.

The problem is that windows doesn't keep the prefered AP as a setting so if it is dropped then you need to go down and "find" your AP and reconnect. These connections drop all the time whether it's the walls or neighbors causing it so the fix is to disable Windows XP's management of the interface and use the manufacturers connfig software.

I'll buy that

I am actually having a similar problem with windows and a cisco card. I will eliminate the windows mgmt and allow the cisco ACU handle the config. Never though about that. Great input. KC1

Check the log on the router to see if the router is rebooting or reporting errors. I had a 614+ and until I upgraded the firmware recently a few web pages would kill the router and it would reboot.
