Well, we haven't sent books and movies lately to the troops in Iraq that we have contact with.... The group in Afganistan that those books and movies went to had a nice media room and library where they could watch. Not so sure about the current group's setup. Thanks to our Mr. Gadget 300winmag.... The Hobbit Hole has been sending out these knives and other useful stuff, along with Wneighbor's chips, salsa and sweets...

winmag may correct me on the details, but I think he's sent out over 100 of them by now.

This page isn't up to date (I'll sweet-talk my honey about that) but these pages talk about it! The Hobbit Hole :: Troop support projects

I have the great pleasure of running the Hobbit Hole "Skunk Works". Based on my past Army experience, I search constantly for gadgets or products that will make live, and survival, easier for our troops. Of course, if something looks promising, I have to buy one to evaluate. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it. :)

The Hobbit Hole pocket knife is our bread-and-butter gadget, but we also send EMT snips (an amazing tool for $2), GMRS radios, assorted types of flashlights, sunscreen, solar showers, and just about anything else that will hold up, and (hopefully) be on sale. We aren't made of money, so smart shopping is a big part of the effort.

But this is an effort by the entire Hobbit Hole. People contribute generously to my "department", and to Wneighbor, who handles edibles, reading material, and movies. Other folks have specific individuals in mind, and we contribute to those packages, too.

We've purchased 181 knives to date, but the last 40 are still awaiting laser engraving, and my "tuning". I spend about ten minutes on each knife, making sure all the screws are tightened with loctite, and then the knife is given a final honing on a leather strop. The knife is as perfect as I can make it, and I sleep well at night, knowing I'm not letting some little problem slip by me.

If anyone is interested in sending one of these knives to someone in the military, please freepmail me.
