Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I know about spontaneous combustion! I fear hay! I can't wait to have a separate building or at least fire-escapable barn.
Does this apply for cotten bales too? Last season we saw some on fire. Smoke seen a couple of miles before we got to it.
It was a shock to me at 1st that alcohol and aspiration not done with horses:') The owner a nurse too and we were talking about that awhile back.
You are right. I did see a barn full of hay burn a few weeks ago. It was an old horse barn/stables that the current owner was storing only round bales of hay inside. The building was destroyed and bales of the hay were still smoldering one week later when I passed by.
I don't think that happens to cotten bales. Usually they burn for other reasons and once started, near impossible to put out.
Around here cotten is picked and compressed into one huge bale at the ends of the fields. Then a cover is placed over the top to protect it from weather. A few days later a truck with a special bed will back up to the bales and pull it onto the bed with something like a conveyer belt/chains. The bale is then taken to a cotten gin for ginning. I will try to make a picture or two for you to see later. It is almost ready to be picked now.
My vet uses alcohol! and by aspiration do you mean back drawing the needle to check to see that you don't get blood? That is done too. He did neither?
I never get in the way of where the vet wants to do shots, but when I do them myself, I prefer to give them low in the hindquarter. I have seen horses get so sore the day after shots to the neck that they can't get their head down to graze. No matter where the shot is given, I usually deep muscle rub the shot area after a muscle shot.... I believe it helps prevent the sort of soreness that can develop after such a shot (like your tetanus shot). Especially if the shots have been refrigerated, the vaccine is thick, and I think rubbing it helps disperse the bubble of fluid faster and prevents soreness. I think they appreciate it, I think it probably either smarts or itches, and that might be why she was stomping. I'd stomp if I had an itch and no hands ;~D
My horses are vulnerable and trapped if my hay blows.... I don't like it.
Yeah that's what this was. It was ready for the truck. Firetrucks there but I doubt if they were able to salvage any.
Yes, you need a separate hay shed/shelter away from your stalls. Cats will keep the mice at bay for you.....
Uh, will you need any extra cats? (my cat collection is growing faster than my "planter" collection.)
I do not know of a way to put a cotten fire out once it starts. : (
Well, right now, I am renting and don't have a lot of options but the structure I've got!
Maybe you two will have your own place someday. : )
Oh we will! I'm going to build and run my boarding stable.
Can you buy the place you lease?
Remember, with a separate hay shed too. : )
He told me her shoulders might be sore a few days. Tetnus does that:'(. I probably won't ride again til Sun or Mon anyway. I've learned the neck markers but I'm not sure where to give it in the hindquarters. Are their nerve areas to avoid like in humans?
Maybe, and it has crossed my mind as a resale property.... but it isn't big enough (7 acres) for the boarding stable (though the location isn't bad) I want 20 acres ~at least~ that butts up to the state forest ;~D
Our hay stored in the barn but each stall also has an outside door.
I may do hay in one end of the same building (picture big barn with arena in the center, stalls down the outside, and hay at one end. All the stalls will have outside exits to paddocks though.
You can build a portable hay barn on slats and move it on a flat bed if you move. Eddie built a 12x16 on our lake lot. Kind of like those storage buildings you see for sale.
