The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread
Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads
. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts
look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in
. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics
land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news
. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Old Reggie kept telling me not to worry that the cat would come down. I went over there two days and tried to get her down with tuna fish. I think she stayed up there about 6-7 days.

I had one once that would stalk me. He loved to hide behind the corner and attack me as I went by. He knew I was going to kick him against the wall ever time but it never stopped him. He also would just pounce on me when I was sitting on the couch and take a fast bite and run. He did that one time when the preacher visiting. Almost shocked them. His name was AC (attack cat) I changed it do ACDC. He just died one day. I told your mother I left him under a tree for 3 days because I wanted to see if he would come back to life :') My son finally buried him.
The cat hated me every since my son put a sock over his head. I took it off and I guess he thought I did it because the fight was on til he died.

Yahoo does not allow posting of pictures from their "free" members site. I read the agreement, and it looks like I was in violation. Hair was able to see it before they caught me.
I will try and find a web host, and post the pictures.

Hey guys. Here's some ancient history.

This was some time in the early 80s, just after I got out of law school. I was wearing a Caliente jockey helmet because those were the only ones that offered any real head protection at the time. I was riding this crazy mare Bella - she was a field hunter until her owner died in the hunting field. Fell from her back stone dead - they brought him back draped across the saddle. The widow basically said that she never wanted to see the mare again, she wound up at this barn. She was very hot and nobody wanted to ride her - I was stupid enough to try. She is fighting the martingale in this picture- wish I had known about German martingales then. I eventually got her calmed down enough to where I could show her. A friend of mine was on the mike - as we entered the ring he announced, "And now, direct from the Meat Packing Circuit . . . " She was a bony old girl and had navicular, but lived until age 25 or thereabouts. Melanoma - the scourge of grey horses - eventually got her.

Isn't it funny how cats can pick what people they like and which ones they don't. A friend of mine use to have one that if she didn't like you she could give you the best go to hell looks you ever saw. She was a natural snob.

You know I have heard that about greys, and then others say it's not true. But I did buy a grey one time from a local lady here. This lady is the queen of barrel racing in this area, when you see her drive up alot of competitors leave.
Anyway she called me up one day and said that she was selling her old grey barrel horse and wondered if I could use him in competive trails riding. I knew she had been offered $20,000 plus for this horse numerous times. He ran barrels like no other horse I had ever seen. She said she would sell him to me for $2000. I couldn't believe it. I got him and he was a great horse. He was not use to trails and it was going to take some time to get him use to having horses leave him, but he didn't get totally stupid over it. I kept telling my husband somewhere there is a hole in this horse or she would not have sold him for that. Well the first time I went to give him a bath I ran my hand down the back side of his tail bone and it was as lumpy as an old mattress. Took him to the vet and he said melanoma, and it had alread spred to his sheath.
I had had several calls from barrel racers trying to buy him from me, it was the talk of the barrel racing community that the horse had been sold to some "trial rider" like what a waste. I called one back that I knew and asked her if she still wanted him. She said how much I said what I gave for him. She was like dumb founded. I then proceeded to tell her why. I said I can't sell him without telling you first he has melanoma. She went ahead and took him, but he was never right. Had trouble keeping weight on him supposedly from ulcers, but I always wondered if it wasn't the cancer spreading. She finally sold him as a junior barrel horse. Last I heard he was still running. I had a friend who had a pony that died of that and it wasn't pretty. They waited a little too long in my opinon to put him down, and I didn't want to have to be in a position of making that decision when the time came. So I sold him.
Since then I've had people say I should have kept him, that he still had a lot of good years left. But I've got no regrets. The lady I bought him from swears she didn't know. Who knows. I'm just glad I didn't have to be the one worrying about it.
