The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I think she has a really cute face . . . proud mama that I am :-D

Of course! And the females of both types are naturally lighter than the males. She's a great build for agility, and I bet I could pull her into a duck boat.

I took the grandkids to the zoo Sun. We went into the petting area. The 4 y/o ignored the pen with the pony. He went straight to the CHICKENS! He did agree with me though that the camel (not in the petting area) was one ugly looking horse.:')

It's two water bottles turned on their sides with the caps facing the camera. Looks like each officer has a water supply, look on down the line and you can see more pairs of bottles standing under the barricades.

I figured he was used to crowds and just looking for something out of the ordinary that might have spooked him. No telling. Horses funny. Mine acts up about the tractor even though it brings him hay all the time but today rabbits kept running across the arena into a field we were riding. I was ready but it never phased him even though they would even surprise me, when I knew they were in the grass.

I have what I consider to be a "bombproof" horse - she rarely spooks at anything, even stuff that makes me jump a mile. We were riding down a country road one time and passed a machine shop just as a very large diesel compressor beside the building cut on - with a very loud bang and then a huge rattling and roaring noise. I startled so violently I almost lost my stirrups - the mare turned her head and looked back at me like, "What's the matter with you?" Never missed a beat of her walk.

On the other hand, we were riding in the arena when two of the barn kids came down the hill about 100 feet away giving each other rides in a wheelbarrow. She saw that apparition and reared up and plunged forward - luckily I was in position and had my reins fairly short or I would have just rolled off over her tail. The other thing that frightened her was when some guys near the arena were loading 50 gal drums and dropped one off the tailgate of a pickup truck. It was partially full of liquid, and as it rolled down the slope it wobbled and made sloshing noises. The mare stood stock still and stared at it, but she was trembling so hard I got off as I was afraid she would lose her footing and fall down! I patted her and turned her around so she couldn't SEE that horrible thing, and after a few minutes she calmed down. But she gave the big beady eye to the black oil drums we use for jumps in the ring for a LONG time afterwards, expecting them to start rolling and sloshing . . .

Horses aren't fungible.

His salability depends on the horse, his health, his level of training, the local market for your horse's breed, level of training, and experience. Not to mention the other horses of the same type available.

Is he sound, at correct weight, correctly shod, well turned out, coat in bloom, quiet to ride, drive, and lead? Has he vetted out? If he's presented at his optimum, you need to look at your advertising strategy. Maybe you're targeting the wrong market. Have you taken him to shows, trials, hunts etc. to display him to the appropriate market? My trainer has had good success with selling "on the side" at shows - and she's bought a couple of good school ponies that way.

The mare's name is Reba McIntyre:).

She is doing great out on the trails. Just talked to the guy that owns her. I told him she really needs to be shoed. My boots are too big for her and she is really getting ouchy on the rocks. She went about an hour and forty minutes today. Still sweating up alot and fast, but her respiration stays within acceptable perameters especailly with the humidity we are having.

Not long now till your wedding:). I saw your pictures on the HH. Looks like you'll have a nice crowd. Have a great day. I will be thinking of you on Sat:)

Thank you! The family arrives down here later this morning, going to do horsey-rides for the kids on the lead line. It ought to be a treat for the kids, and we'll take some pictures I am sure! :~D

Anyone else who will be available Saturday, you will be able to see a little bit of the wedding via our webcam... Sounds silly I know, but when so many friends we share are online here, we've got to try to include them. Many from the hobbit hole thread are traveling to see it... I think that's great.

Here is the info and the link to the webcam page. The camera may go live off and on between now and Saturday, but the main event is noon Pacific time Saturday.

We're not going anywhere.... some of our FR friends will be staying a few days after to visit. We went to Florida in January, so we already had a big trip this year. Easier for us after all this excitement to just relax at home!

The family all came down for horsey rides today, pics in the Hobbit Hole: 145
