The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

To those of you who looked at the photo of Wood Chip Brown AKA "CHIP",and thought the helicopter arrived via photo shop, I'll tell you what the former owner (Seated on Chip, and is at present a Riverside Police Officer) told me:
Look at the bottom of his tail.

The airflow from the helicopter is pushing it UP.

Agreed. I used to not like westerns at all because of it, but I can watch now and appreciate the horsemanship without cringing. If it looks bad, I can now believe it wasn't. :~D

My other interest is running. I'm getting ready for the Marine Corps Marathon in October. Did it in '92, always wanted to do it again.

Where's everyone at.

I got the boots for the horses in today. We tried the front ones on Rusty and they looked good and fit good. When I trotted him around he high steped for awhile:). Guess they feel funny. I won't get a chance to ride till Sat. Bunko tonight, and tomorrow I have my grandkids. I think I will put them on him and let him stand tied for awhile tho tomorrow. Get the feel of them, front and back. They're kind of cute. Look like a tennis shoe. Very Very easy to put on and take off. Will take some pictures tomorrow.

Yeah - the thread's been quiet the last few days, I've been gone all day, workin' on cleaning and prepping the beach house... wedding in three weeks!

Poured rain today, reportedly there was actually a little tornado that touched down not far from here!

Good news. I sold my trailor to the farrier after all,( then turned around and gave the money to his mamma for Okie's keep awhile ;')

Best news is that I figured out how to make him be still while mounting out of the round pen. Backing up and walking back around not getting it. Each time I got off the block and walked him away and made him lunge in short circles with the lead rope. (he hates circles) Each time slowed him down but wearing me out too. I was praying I was going to have the endurance to finish. Finally , he's so tired he's tripping and I'm so tired I don't know if I can try once more. He stood drooping and I crawled on:') Next trailor loading and I'm all set!

Yall have a good holiday. I'll be back lurking Tue (going to the lake).

And also you!

Glad you found something that works for mounting! - Sometimes Bay is better than other times at that. He knows he is supposed to be still here at home, but sometimes the excitement on trail gets to him.

Hullo, seems the thread is 'resting' this weekend. I haven't had time to ride, been busy getting the place ready for the wedding and visiting!

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend!

Just now checking my messages. Snake?, you know that little cripple chick was gone the next day after you were here. Just gone, no trace, but all the others were here. I figured he was raptured:)

No, I haven't tried the boots yet. With the manhunt going on in the woods, I don't want to ride by myself, and it' seems a bit pointless just to ride in the arena with them. I'm gonna try them tomorrow for sure. At least up the county line road. There's lot's of gravel there, should give me clue as to how they are going to work. Hopefully they'll get this guy caught or give up.

was the cage still closed? the snake i found today was curled up where the hens lay the eggs, it was about 4 or 5 feet long. bob got it out and it was trying to bite him. i don't what he did with it, but he is gone now and that is ok with me. have to work tommorrow 1:30 to 11:00p.m. it sucks, but, oh well if you aren't on i will try to talk to you tommorrow.

Yeah the cage was all shut up tight. Maybe he figured out I was getting ready to whack him:(. Anyway whatever happened I'm glad because I was dreading having to do it.

We bought one of those swings with a top yesterday, and sat out on the patio all evening. It will lay down and make a bed, I may sleep out there sometime, once I know our fugitive is gone:). I'm afraid if I'd come in thru the night Mack would shoot me:). Have you heard anything about that guy, have they caught him? I haven't had the TV on all weekend.

Did you hear the sirens the other night? I swear the weathermen are getting more stupid the more high tech equipment they get. We didn't even get one drop of rain. Darn sirens woke me up twice. I have a feeling the time they DON'T sound them is when a tornado will hit:)

Ok, I tried my new Boa Boots and they were wonderful. Easy to put on, absolutly NO gimping, and I took him on the gravelyest (is that a word:) places I could close to home, (I have a fugitive from justice lurking in my woods right now, and that has shut down my trail riding by myself). The only problem was that Rusty has gotten a cut probably from playing with Harley right at the spot where the top of the boot hits his pastern, and the boot rubbed the cut, so I didn't ride long. But I was bound an determinded to at least give them a try. Have you noticed that sort of thing always happens at the worst time:(. I will try them on Harley later but we are expecting company in while so I have to do a bit of house work. Here's some pictures of them on him. I let him wonder around in the front yard a few minutes to get the feel of them before I climbed on. He was really high stepping for a while but got use to the feel real fast.

At this point I would say they are the best invention since the wheel:)

Hey those look really cool! I like how they protect the coronet band... I think that would be beneficial on some rocky trails.

Sorry I am so ~gone~ this last week, no riding, no horse stories, no chit-chat.... busy busy busy!

Yeah they are great.

Hey, you've got good reason to be not riding. You don't get married but once:)

That's true! Hard for many people to understand why ~mowing~ is part of the wedding plan that needs done! I want the place to look nice for his parents! I know they aren't photographers from "Better Western Farm" but ~still~. :~D

Good morning, are you at the beach or home?

Getting ready to go saddle a horse. Mack is going to call a friend who is a policeman to see if they caught the fugitive. If I get the all clear I will take Harley trail riding today. Other wise it's arena work for both of them, and Rocky will try the boots today. I haven't put them on him yet, but I'm not expecting it to be a problem. He's too laid back to care:). Still testing the mare, nothing yet:(. I'm about ready to go get the shot. I don't like having so many horses here to feed.

Good morning!

I am at home.... looking out at my ponies in the nice mowed pasture!

Today I am going to do some maintenance on the pasture fence. Noticed yesterday that the white tape around the outside is rotted, it hasn't been replaced like the rest has, and is now three years old. That stuff works really well, but it doesn't last, it rots and becomes so brittle that it breaks. I am going to replace it and add a couple new hardwires to that fence too and tighten the whole show. I hadn't looked at it in awhile, and I decided yesterday, that the fence between the horses and the road should be my ~best~ fence, not my worst!

I do like fencing, I dreamt about it last night. it is almost as satisfying as mowing or burning. Nice to sit back and look at your work ;~D
