 Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |
Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
We only have concrete hills here:') When I start trails it might be something I need to think about. I have one still in the package:') No one uses them around here. In fact a lot go bAreback but that's for later maybe.
Yeah, I'm still here:)

From my conversations, it appears that the Federal Government, USDA, took up this cudgel after 9/11 as a politically-motivated anti-terrorist ploy. It sounds like they thought [think] they could make this fly on the basis of foreigners introducing zoonotics into this country via imported livestock.

Of course, they completely ignore the quarantine and inspection methods employed with all livestock entering the country that would effectively thwart such an outlandishly-proposed attempt.

It would also appear that pressure has been exerted by our "trading partners" who want to eat our horses to provide them with "pure" horsemeat.

One of the more interesting things that has occurred is that, on February 14, 2004 on U. S. Farm Report, Assistant Secretary of Agriculture Jim Mosley stated [and this was verified with the host of that program in Chicago, Orren Samuelson, by phone] that the intention was to promulgate this ID plan by Executive Order, not to let it go through Congress with the attendant rulemaking/public comment period process.

The AHC, at their convention recently in Washington, devoted a whole day to this subject. However, from the replies I have received from Amy Mann regarding zoonotics, it seems to have been most propaganda. AHC has acknowledged they did nothing in this regard until, at the earliest, last summer--at least a year and a half after the cattle/swine/sheep industries began their work on their USAIP; and the Equine Working Group was constituted only at or after that time.

All that being said, the underlying procedures of this idea, as stated at this time, are that:

1) Control will be exerted only on those animals that are moved from their home grounds, especially into and out of communal environments such as horse shows, competitive and endurance rides, sales, etc. It has been admitted by all concerned, including Neil Hammerschmidt, that it is a physical impossibility to identify every animal in the country;

2) That ear tags are not acceptable in the equine community, but that whatever identification is mandated the owner will pay for it.

Any intrusive policing and/or inspection of private property or livestock habitat is hotly denied by USDA, APHIS, and Veterinary Services.

THIS IS SOME OF IT....BEING POSTED ON YAHOOGROUPS EQUINE WEBSITES
What a lovely looking canter. He looks fantastic. Didn't he have a recent diagnosis of navicular?
we got the brakes fix on the van and tommorrow we are going to try and get the tires fix on the trailer then i will be mobile again i am ready to go riding with you.
It also might stem from splint boots being a nightmare on trails where there is mud. They'll rub like sandpaper and take the hide right off. (deja vu, yes I know we already talked about this)

I came from jumping circles, so I used to use splint boots all the way around when I started trail, until the first time I went through mud and water.
Her brushing in back is not bad. I have had the same set of boots for years, and the bottom edge of the leather is barely frayed. As long as she's shod regularly she doesn't strike.
Yeah, I thought that last picture was beautiful too.

Becky
hey i see new people, thats great.
I was going to see if you wanted to come ride tomorrow??

Becky
The busy bodies want to know everything, don't they?
yea i do but it will have to be later and then i think we are going to try and go to team penning if we get everything fixed. i am off on friday also, how long will you have jp friday.
I didn't notice any hair wear at all inside Gracie's boots. (They were really nasty on the OUTside though! I swear I ought to carry a pair of Rubbermaid gloves to deal with her boots after a hunt.) I do run them through the washing machine occasionally to get any ingrained mud and sand out.
Yes, thanks, he is looking good! (they both are ;~D) Yes, he does have Navicular, but he is moving really well. He has been trimmed with a rounded over toe in front to help him break over easier, has pads on his heels to help even more, and he is on Ixoprene, which is a circulation drug. I am not having to Bute him at all and I am very pleased with how strong he is this year.
It looks like the guy changed his mind about my trailor so my husband has decided he wants to keep it. He says he can add a bigger door and maybe make it a slant.

AGAIN, I DID NOT COMPILE THIS BUT PULLING IT FROM EQUINE YAHOOGROUPS. JUST PUTTING THE WORD OUT TO ALL YOU FELLOW HORSE LOVERS.
Well that makes sense. Heather the little girl that comes rides with me on Wed. always wraps Rocky's legs, and I have wondered how those wraps feel to him after going thru the creek. She uses polo wraps. She does it purely for making him pretty. She has bought all blue tack, she has a black synthentic saddle, but everything else is BLUE. She's so cute. I get ashamed because some of my stuff is really wore. I buy a new pad aleast every other year. I think the pads are about the most important piece of tack. That and the cinch.
