I didn't know there is a controversy - I didn't tune in until Purdy was on 17 and Stewart was already in the clubhouse waiting to see if there'd be a playoff. What's the ruling issue?

On the last hole Stewart's ball went in a "waste area" (they're rare on tour). It looks like a sand bunker, but is actually filled with tiny shells, pebbles, etc.

In a normal bunker one is not allowed to move the ball or disturb the surface in any way. But the rules are different for a waste area. One is allowed to remove any pebbles or other foreign objects which may interfere with the ball where the clubhead impacts.

As soon as his ball landed he went to the PGA rules official and reviewed with him exactly what he was allowed to do and not do. He followed those instructions to a "t". But viewers saw him on his knees removing objects in "a bunker" and cried foul...said he'd improved his lie.

Some people called the tournament and officials reviewed the tape immediately after the awards ceremony. They ruled in Stewart's favor.
