Circles, hover, spin in place, lazily floating downward, or upward, backwards, they can do some fairly odd maneuvers for being an aircraft.
However, they really aren't all that fast.
So they'd appear to float and make slow deliberate progress.
Much as described.
The one I've seen painted as a globe did somewhat of a 'loop' but without turning over, it sorta went upward, then reversed, and then dropped before going forward again, but in a rather smooth motion.
(Kinda like doing a loop, but without turning over..)

The guy 'driving' the thing was pretty much playing with the thing like a kid in a candy store.
Reminded me of "flightof the bumblebee" for some reason when I saw it.
Closer to the ground, it looked more menacing than comical though.
Especially when coming around from behind a tree.
(Dwarfed the tree, but still..)

Wow.. I wonder if that was what it was. It sure sounds like it.. Do they go really high? This one did do circles, but never seemed to roll over or even go side to side.. All the time I looked at it, it looked like it was in the same position. Only tilting enough to pick up a glint of sun now and then.

Wish you could find a pic of that thing..
