PRESS RELEASE: Maccabi vs. Pamesa goes to Disciplinary Judge Mar 24, 2004

Pamesa Valencia has officially communicated to Euroleague Basketball S.L. its decision to not travel to Israel for its Top 16, Week 4 game against Maccabi Tel Aviv. The game is scheduled for 19:40 Central European Time (GMT + 1, six hour difference between Eastern - GMT-5 - time) today, Thursday, March 25.

The Spanish club has alleged that Israel did not offer adequate conditions under which to play the game within a normal environment. In relation to the decision taken by Pamesa, Euroleague CEO Jordi Bertomeu has said: "Pamesa has communicated to us that they will not travel to Tel Aviv because they consider that the current situation in Israel is not adequate for playing a basketball game and would negatively influence the state of mind and emotions of their players. We respect their decision, but at the same time we understand that our obligation was to work to guarantee the security measures necessary for this type of visit, and that is what we have done." Bertomeu added that he appreciated that Pamesa Valencia "has recognized publicly its confidence in the measures adopted to guarantee the security of all member of its traveling party."

Once the Spanish team's failure to appear is confirmed, Euroleague Basketball S.L. will put all documentation necessary at the disposal of the Disciplinary Judge of the competition, Mr. Jose Manuel Meirim, who will determine the consequences of Pamesa's absence.
