VICTORIA - Two pit bulls mauled a seeing-eye dog in a savage attack on a Victoria street Monday night.
Oriano Belusic, who is visually impaired, was out walking with his wife Doris when the pit bulls ran from a nearby house and attacked his guide dog.
"All kinds of commotion broke loose," Belusic said. "My wife was yelling and the dogs were squealing and making noise and spinning in circles.
"I then grabbed on to my guide dog's leash and got her as close as possible, and my hand found the pit bull and I basically just threw myself on the pit bull and forced it to the ground and held it there, but it wouldn't let go of my guide dog's neck."
Doris Belusic said a man driving past the scuffle stopped his car and joined in the fray, kicking the pit bull twice in the head until it released the guide dog.
"We really thank him, because had it not been for him, she wouldn't have made it," Belusic said.
The guide dog, a yellow lab, had surgery to sew up her injuries at a veterinary hospital Tuesday.
The pit bulls were taken to the pound, where they will stay for several weeks.
