Uncle Oran folding the Flag with the funeral director was perhaps the most touching and sentimental part of the ceremony.

I guess what irks me the most about this is that having been military, and knowing protocol for how things are done, they should have had #1 a cell phone and/or a beeper, #2 a map to the cemetery, and #3 a time of arrival. The ONLY excuse I would accept as valid a this point would be a complete vehicular breakdown in the middle of nowhere. At the very least, they should have called.

You're right. I feel very sad as a part of our society that no one made it to the ceremony for this. My condolences on that as well. It should have happened.

Were you promised a military honor guard? If so, you really have a reason to be upset.

Since Michigan has no major military facilities, it falls to the VFW to supply honor guards to those who request it. This is what happened for my father's and uncle's funerals.

Seven old guys with M1s with blank adapters, and one playing Taps on a boombox. It still broke me up.
