Since I'm alone at work, I have a chance to look at the two knives more closely. At this point, the Kershaw seems to have a definite edge over the Schrade. The Schrade opens easier because the blade pivots against the slick plastic of the inside of the handle. The Kershaw seems to use metal washers. The CRKT had plastic washers for its bearing surfaces.

Also, the Schrade is built more like a traditional pocket knife, with a totally-enclosed handle. The Kershaw is built more like a contemporary CQB knife, with two separate flat slabs for handles, and metal spacers to keep everything together. This means the knife is much more open, and under harsh conditions is can be cleaned by blowing the crud out, or running water through it, and then letting it dry.

The Schrade is considerably lighter, and under stressful conditions, a quick opening move might just flick the entire knife out of your hand. The pocket clip in the Kershaw is removable, making the knife even flatter for bottom-of-the-pocket carry.

Both knives will be laser engraved with the Hobbit Hole "proto" designation, just to see how it looks. But for now, the Kershaw is the clear leader.

One possible shortcoming that I'm starting to feel is the sharp shape of the thumb stud of the Kershaw. It starts to feel like it's digging in after the first few dozen openings. I may grind off the top "step", making it a bit lower and broader, but also easier on the thumb. I had to do that to my Cuda Dominator, too.

Update: Mom and family are in port (Houston) waiting in the line at Customs. *If* they can make it to Fort Worth by 3:00, the funeral director said they could meet today @ 3:00 for planning grandpa's funeral. Otherwise, they can regroup tomorrow @10:00 am.

I am so relieved that they are back and safe!

Schrade sounds like a good knife... I've seen this model before, but never held it...

doubt you'll find the perfect knife, but sounds like you have two good candidates. Thanks fer the research... I'm sure yer hatin' it...

btw, have a close friend that's leaving for Iraq in a few weeks, any chance I could get one of the last HH knives? Joe's father was a Marine rifleman on Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. Joe's patriotism, Faith in God, and dedication to country and Corps are inestimable. He is a well deserving candidate.

I'm getting ready to head out to take back bottles, pick up an Elizabethan collar for Cleo, and (finally) cash or deposit my check from the St. Patrick's Day concert. Then I might go on a shopping spree...or maybe just pick up some eggs and meat. ;-)

I'm also making a decision about something Dad wants me to do that would benefit me, too. I've mentioned Mom's dachshund, Fritz, who they still have at the house. Dad doesn't want him and has tried half-heartedly to get rid of him, without much success. I'd thought of taking him permanently myself, but don't know that I could handle yet another pet. Soo...he's offered to give me some money and cancel what I owe him already if I'm willing to take Fritzi for the time being and work on finding a real place for him...either see if the local shelter will take him or try to find a dachshund rescue group that might know of someone who would want him. Dad really doesn't want to deal with it.

I may pick him up later today and just see how this works. It's been awhile since both dogs lived together in the same house, though they do see each other all the time.

I think our rain finally stopped. It poured like the DICKENS all night, though. I had a hard time getting home from the jam...it was really, really foggy. Missed the turn across the river to VT and had to inch my way back. Kinda scary...I've not driven much in fog like that. Couldn't always see the edge of the road!

The down-side...and it's a pretty big one...is that he isn't always reliable when it comes to "going" outside...so at least unless I was able to break him of that, he'd have to be confined while I wasn't home. If someone is paying attention, he'll ask to go out, but doesn't always make a big effort. Fiona will thunder back and forth between the back and front doors...so I can't help but notice!

Maybe she'll be an example for him? ;-) That's part of the reason he hasn't made a hard effort to find a home for him...he doesn't want to put that burden on someone else. I'm betting if he just lived somewhere where someone was more attuned to him, he'd be fine. That's probably not me...but I'll get to have him for awhile, which will be kind of nice.
