Can someone please help?
TOPICS: Computers/Internet
KEYWORDS: monitors; screensaver
I have a 2 1/2 year old Fujitsu laptop. I was working on the computer when the monitor just went blank, like the power went out. But the power did not go out. The monitor simply went blank. I can hear the hard drive working, but there is no picture on the screen. Does this mean the monitor is trash or is this fixable within a reasonable cost? Please help.

My experience with laptops is limited. But I recall one that had a display on/off function key combination.
Check your manual to see if you inadvertently toggled the display away.
Why would they have this feature? Because you can connect a standard monitor to your laptop for use. I am VERY cautious about this matter of "hot-swapping" but plan B could be to plug another monitor into your laptop to see if you can, uh, see.
Take care, and good luck.

Have you tried rebooting it? This assumes you saved recently before the screen stopped working.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the monitor is the MOST expensive part of the laptop.
That said, do not despair! All is not lost!
If you have a spare monitor for a desktop system, you can use that. If you don't have a spare monitor, you can get a non-flatscreen model for cheap these days.
Plug the monitor VGA/SVGA cable into the back of your laptop and then hold down the Fn key and hit F10. Your video output will then go to your external monitor and you'll be set.
Chances are pretty fair that your monitor and internal graphics card are fine and the contact between the system and the screen has simply come loose. I had that happen to me with an old laptop and I was able to fix it after about a half-hour of taking it apart, cleaning the contacts and reassembly.
Good luck. Let me know how it turns out.

If you don't have a spare, find one!
Make sure you have a fully charged battery and carry the laptop down to a local PC repair shop and ask nicely if you could plug in to one for 5 minutes to save your work onto a floppy. Then you can use another PC to print while yours is being repaired or replaced.
Good luck!
