Okay, I'm still having trouble posting graphics. Here is my New Year's Day Resolution post.Essentially, I'm still falling short, despite the kind advice given to me: I can't seem to post pics. Perhaps it's my method. If I'm doing this all wrong, violating posting rules, let me know.
What I feel more comfortable with is coming across a graphic that is interesting, then when the time is right, going into my hard drive and posting, let say, a picture of John Kerry with two heads, showing to the world he's a flip flopper.
Now, I have some HTML/Graphics books:
This should be my Rosetta Stone. From SAMS "Teach Yourself HTML 4 in 24 Hours" By Dick Oliver, Hour 10, p. 148:
"Theoretically, you can include an image from any Internet Web pay within your own pages. For example, you could includea picture of my family by putting the following on your web page:
(I'm leaving out the front and the end of the tags, cuz it's on dead link.)
img src="http://netletter.com/dicko/olivers.gif"
The image would be retrieved from my server computer whenever your page was displayed.
You could do this, but you shouldn't! Not only is it bad manners (it often costs people money whenever you pull something from their server computer), it also can make your pages display more slowly. You also have no way of controlling whether the image has been changed or deleted. If someone gives you a copy of the image to republish an image from one of his pages, always transfer a copy of that image to your computer and use a local file reference such as img src="olivers.gif"
Can't seem to do this!! Part of my problem is conceptual: How on Earth is the FReeper server going to find and save from my computer that picture of Kerry which was e-mailed to me a month ago and saved in "My Pictures" on my "C" drive????
Short answer; It's not!
Any graphic or sound file you want to include in a post on a web site has to be stored on a server on the web. It can be your server or someone else's, but it's got to be on the web, not your hard drive.
FreeRepublic does not provide space for anyone to store images, so you'll have to find your own.
There are a few sites that allow you to sign up for a free account to store your pictures. They usually don't allow you to link to your pictures from other sites, so this isn't going to help you.
Many ISP's provide you with a certain amount of storage space, this might be your best bet. Contact yours and find out.
Good luck!
It's your only bet.
In order for the image to display when you attempt to post it, it MUST already exist on a web site somewhere.
That can be yours (your ISP) or a page where you found it (BUT, you already pointed out the risks of using a link to a site you don't control)
Most 'free' photo hosting services don't allow external links to the pictures. They're 'free' because they're loaded with adds, and if you link to the picture, you don't see the ads
Until you have a server identified, it's too soon to attempt to cover that.
If you have a Macintosh computer, Apple makes the entire thing extremely simple, from building the web site to uploading and hosting the pictures. (not really sure if you can link to them though)
