"Passion" - To See or Not to See
self
Posted on 02/18/2004 2:32:03 PM PST by hsmomx3
I have heard a small number of Christians refer to Bible references that forbids movies such as "The Passion." Here are some Bible verses brought to my attention:
Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire: Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female (Deut. 4:15-16).
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Rom. 10:17).
For we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Cor. 5:7).
For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? (Rom. 8:24).
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him (Heb. 11:6).

What are your thoughts about this?
I see absolutely no conflict between seeing this movie and the scriptures you have provided.
But, it's your call. ;-)
I'm voting, "See It"

Really, if this is the correct interp of these passages, then bibles with pictures destroy faith. Otherwise, are you not bearing false wittness?

I have mixed feelings about a movie like this.
I'm not sure those verses are pertinent.

What are your thoughts about this? The supplied verses are ripped from their context.
Movies are not the problem,
Radios are not the problem,
TVs are not the problem,
CDs are not the problem,
they are only media.
It is the content of the media that creates problems.

Silly argument.
We are not going to worship the film itself so it is not an engraven image. The hearing vs seeing issue is taken out of context. We are still being saved by faith. The movie will save no one. The message of the movie might save many. And the entire movie is based directly on the four Gospels so....what's the problem?

Didnt the taliban have a real problem with the whole "craven images" issue? I would like to think we live in a different century than those animals.

I believe that the writers of the bible were lead to do so by God. That is a "seen" tool to lead to faith. I believe that God does still speak to and through people by different means. Also, He tells us to go out and spread the Good News. I for one am seeing the movie.
To: hsmomx3
I don't think *any* of those verses can be correctly applied to teach that a movie like this is forbidden. After all, if 'seeing' it happen somehow invalidates faith, then none of the disciples who eye-witnessed it in the 1st Century could have faith.

This would seem to be the only passage cited which might give some pause to seeing the movie. But the passage is in reference to creating an object of worship. I don't think anyone truly expects, or will respond, to the movie "The Passion" as an object of worship. If anyone does worship the movie and its portrayals, that is there sin, not Mel Gibson's.

I think the "Christans" who are twisting are no different than the legalistic, self righteous Pharisees and scribes of Jesus day. You know, the ones Jesus reserved His harshest words for.
SEE THE MOVIE! THIS MOVIE AND IT'S CREATION WAS ORCHESTRATED BY GOD.
Don't let someone with zero discernment steer you wrong.

I never go to movies; but, once it comes in a lifetime when a movie is a "must see!"

twisting = twisting scripture
To: AmericaUnited
THIS MOVIE AND IT'S CREATION WAS ORCHESTRATED BY GOD. According to the director, so is everything. If so, that makes this movie nothing special.

I have no problem with seeing the movie and I think Gibson is very talented. Hollywood will be in shock when they see how many people and how much money will be made from this movie about Christ.
