If you want to call the attention of posters to a thread without making a comment, type their names in the "To:" box and then simply say "ping" as a reply.

It's somewhat like a Ding-a-ling.
Only smaller.

In the IT world a PING stands for Packet Internet Groper.
What it is is like SONAR on your cat5 cable. A signal is sent to a server to see if there is continuity, timing the "bounce".

Some people keep group lists of Freepers that they know have an interest in a particular subject. ( Pro-Life, Israel, War on Terror , many many others) When the list-keep notice an article for which the list applies, they post a short PING message to alert the list that something interesting has been shared.
You can also do it with individuals.

OK - but I see there are lists that get pinged - is there a list of lists, and how do I join?

The Lexicon of FreeRepublic BTW, disregard this part as the pendulum has swung back decidedly in that direction:
At some point there were those who thought FR should be only and exclusively Republican.
There were also those (including Jim Robinson himself) who thought the forum should stand for and work toward a return to true Constitutional standards of government no matter which party or candidate.

OK - but I see there are lists that get pinged - is there a list of lists, and how do I join? When you see a ping list being used that you wish to join, simply reply on the thread (or via freepmail) to the poster who used the ping list that you wish to be added to it.
