Vanity: Any other surfers out there?

Are there any other wave riders out there in FReeperland? I live in southern RI and surf year-round. Most people don't associate surfing with the Northeast, but we get some very good waves as long as you don't mind the cold weather.

Great picture. I don't surf, but I wouldn't mind watching guys doing it. Looks really cold!!!! Thanks though, I have a new wallpaper for my computer.
I'm cold just looking at those waves.

I did when I was 16 then I got whacked by a loose 10' Hobie and knocked unconscience, broke my jaw, concussion, sprained neck and busted teeth.
If my buddy hadn't seen me I would have drowned.
I took up rock climbing after that, much safer.

As one of my good friends used to say "...this water is about 12 beers deep!"

Those are great pictures! Nice to look at FROM the beach.

And here...this is the Cortes Banks, about 100 miles+ out in the Pacific from San Diego.
Its where a seamount comes close to the surface and the waves break at 50'+. They use PWC to tow the surfers back to the breakline.

That's BIG WATER. I did that big water on my spring break year off the coast of Malibu. Ended up sick as a dog and hating it. Those waves...it wouldn't stop. It was a massive sailboat. I hated it. It felt like the world was moving. Me and my friend were so sick. I doubt I'll ever be on big water again, unless it's in a little rubber boat along the shoreline with paddles. I'll stick to my many Wisconsin no-wake lakes for fishing. Otherwise those are great pictures TO LOOK AT! :)

If you want a higher resolution picture, go to the source folder of that image. Those are all 800x600. And if you change the folder date to 02.07.04, you will go to some photos I took yesterday after getting out of the water.

Yeah, the guys that surf Cortez are nuts. It gets up to 18' here, but those waves are 50+. No thanks!

I've been to Maverick's on a big day... and watched from the safety of the cliffs. Those guys are certifiably nuts!
9th Street, Huntington Beach is more my style.

I need to get out to California. But I have been to Costa Rica, so I'm not completely deprived.

HEY! My daughter MaryBeth surfs somewhere in RI. She goes to Newport too. She lives in Mass. Do you perchance know her? I understand it's a rather small community.

50' waves? Holy crap! My first surfing experience was bodysurfing 12 footers off of Newport Beach when I was 12 years old. There was a hurricane off Mexico, and the lifeguards were pooping bricks trying to discourage people from going out into the surf. Newport is not known for big waves and 12 foot surf is rare. I was a heck of a strong swimmer, and didn't realize the danger of a skinny 12-year-old LEARNING about surf in waves that big. I had the time of my life, and had some awesome rides. But 50' foot waves, I can't imagine.

There is speculation that during storm season, the Cortes Banks could produce a 100' breaker.
There is about $1,000,000 in prize money waiting for the first sufer to be documented having ridden a 100' monster.

No, I can't say that I do. I don't surf Newport very often, I stick with my local Narragansett breaks. But in the winter, there are very few women out there, so there's probably a good chance I've seen her before.
