NASCAR Nextel Cup 2004 Daytona 500/Gatorade 125s Qualifying - February 8 @ noon Eastern on NBC
NASCAR ^

Posted on 02/08/2004 8:47:45 AM PST by steveegg

Daytona Beach, FL - Want to enjoy a nice, relaxing week at Daytona International Speedway?

All it takes is two fast laps around the 2.5-mile trioval.

Forty-six drivers will hit the track Sunday, but only two will get the coveted prize -- a spot on the front row for the Daytona 500 on Feb. 15.

Those guys get what is akin to a bye week in the NFL playoffs. They'll have time to work on their race setup while everyone else is prepping for the twin 125-mile qualifying races Thursday -- which basically set the rest of the 43-car field for the Great American Race.

NASCAR uses a unique qualifying setup for the Daytona 500. Today's qualifying run sets the front row for the Daytona 500, the field for the Gatorade Twin 125s on Thursday (used to set positions 4-30 in the 500), and establishes the times used for positions 31-38. The drivers who qualify "odd" (1, 3, 5, etc.) will run in the first Twin 125 for the inside row, while those who qualify "even" (2, 4, 6, etc.) will run in the second Twin 125.

Just had another near miss here in Eureka. Local NBC had some sports show on then they switched to Nascar. Did you get a complete ping list?

Nope.

Kevin Lepage is out right now, and Andy Belmont pulled out (acording to NASCAR.com's Live Leaderboard).

Lepage first lap - 185.70 mph while running a high line getting that restrictor-plate-choked engine up to speed. Second lap - 187.88 mph.

Brendan Gaughan now taking his laps.

Here, thanks for the ping. That was a great race last night, wow!!!! Being an Earnhardt fan I do believe that if DJ wasn't up front, Jr would have won but it certainly was time for someone else to win a plate race I guess. I did love the fact that Jr said DJ was a good friend of his and he was happy to push him up there. He's also given way in the past for Michael. That two tire stop didn't hurt some of them considering the red flag pit stops either.(that was a lucky break) That was a rule I had never seen before on non points races.

Ok, let go with qualifying....wind and cold weather. I guess it will depend a lot now on whether your guy gets that gust of wind during his laps or not.

It's strange to see Kodak on something other than #4.

It's a wicked headwind in the backstretch. Gaughan's 2nd lap - 48.110 seconds (behind Lepage's 47.904).

The cold's good, the wind isn't so good. I didn't have a chance to repost the story from NASCAR.com about that, but Jr has a lifetime helicopter ride into Martinsville from DJ.
Front Row Joe won't be on the front row for long with his 47.936.

I think considering last year we need to also give the Rocketman front row status. Although he does not look good so far at Daytona and he certainly ended last night with a bang. I believe last year was the big end over end for him there also.

Texas Terry up now.

Don't know what it is with Newman and plate tracks; can't be the speed.

Marlin the Mechanic out now (he's gotta still be steamed that they got to work on the cars under the red flag :-)

Brendan Gaughan interview now reminds me of his interview last night re: his helmet signed by the guys of the 82nd Airborne and 10th Mountain Division and one other which I can't remember. He said there are hundreds of signatures on there , but two of them are no longer with us. I hope he does very well in the race...for the guys over there.

I wish Jr would get rid of those dumb hats.

First race is at 1 pm Eastern; both races are on TNT.
Looks like Junie Donlavey will be making an early exit unless Andy Hillenburg picks it up; qualifying lap was 50.700 (177.5 mph, while Lepage and Nemecheck are both more than 10 mph faster). Elliot Sadler (fastest in the second practice) is out, and is looking good.
