Little Girl Recovering After Vicious Pitbull Attack

(University Heights-WABC, February 7, 2004) ? A little girl from the Bronx is covered with stitches and bandages Saturday morning, after being viciously attacked by family dogs.

Three-year old Makailah Barnet was so badly injured -- her lips were almost severed. Her four-year old sister was also hurt. She suffered head injuries.

Police say as many as three dogs may have been involved in the attack. They were removed from the family's University Heights home on Friday.

Shannon Smith, Victim's Mother: When my daughter opened up the door to get the puppy out, the dog that we got last night pushed the door and the two dogs started at something. Makailah kind of got in the middle of it."

The dogs were tranquilized and it is not clear what their fate will be. Makailah is in stable condition at Montefiore Hospital. She underwent what will most likely be the first of many surgeries.

Sounds like Ms. Smith allowed her 3 year old daughter to open an enclosure containing a mother pit bull and her puppy, and take the puppy away from the mother and into a room containing another pit bull who'd just been introduced to the household a day earlier. This scenario virtually guarantees an attack, regardless of the breed, and with the super-jawed pit bull, it guarantees a serious maiming or fatality.
