If you are new to handguns, FIRST get a .38/.357 or .44 Special (NOT magnum) 5 shot concealable revolver. This will get you up to speed in protection the fastest, because you can learn to be effective with a revolver in 10% of the time learning autos will take. If you love shooting and spend a lot of time at the range after you get your revolver, THEN and only then start trying out and practicing with a variety of autos, before selecting one.
