OH! And I bet you're right about the weather and my back! It hardly ever bothers me, but the last few days have been agony.

You know, you're going to think I'm a fanatic about this, but one thing I've found out after breaking my neck was that when I don't drink enough water it causes those muscles to spasm also. I don't think that's a cold weather related part - but it *is* harder for me to remember to drink water when it's cold.
Anyway, when I get a crick or a spasm I always make it a point to drink more water. Truthfully, after all these years I don't know that makes so much difference. But, in the first 2 or 3 years I could definitely see a correlation. Well, and I was still drinking whiskey on a pretty regular basis then. I would notice when I'd get dehydrated from that I would ALWAYS have muscle spasms in that injury related area.
