It's about a big Russian family that immigrates to (if I remember right) Baltimore, a few at a time. They all save up money to help bring the rest of the family over. It follows for several generations...that's where it gets depressing, because the big, close extended families just don't exist anymore.
It seems like a movie that you either love or hate. The plot is kinda meandering since it's just following life. There are big events, but not really ONE climax. But it really captures what family is about, and has a lot of funny quotes. I like it a lot.

Sounds like an interesting movie. Any idea why it was called "Avalon"?--the title made me think of King Arthur, which is one reason I asked.
