I started watching in Feb/Mar of 1990... I had just recently moved to Austin but hadn't found a job yet. MST3k was this weird show on Monday afternoons on The Comedy Channel (as it was called then) that for some reason I just couldn't stop watching.

I wasn't sure I liked the departure of Larry and the arrival of Frank with the start of Season 2, or the change in Tom Servo's voice that happened at the same time...

Well... coasties have somewhat more predictable "situations" than Marines do.

When I was in, the CG was on a streak of some ten or more years since they'd ever had to shoot somebody. It just doesn't come up all that often. By the time a cutter nails somebody in the act and gets boarding party over there... the whole crew of the drug boat is already "assuming the position" on the fantail, on their knees, hands behind their heads, fingers interlaced. They know the drill better than we do.

I never once had to draw my weapon... and only had to slap leather once, with a fisherman that was a little "angry".

Sure, there are bone fragments ... but it's durn hard to pull DNA out of cooked bone.

Or, you could use a funeral home's incinerator.

It's very hard to switch caskets. Once a funeral home gets a body, it's too memorable --- good funeral homes know what "Mr. So-and-so" looked like; they may have pictures from the family. After the body gets to the funeral home, it's too visible to swap --- too many people see it, touch it, wash it, dress and adorn it. And then there's the funeral. Plenty of cultures prefer an open-casket service, even cultures that don't have the casket open for the funeral have a wake or something where the deceased is on view. And, also, most modern caskets are locked. The keys are easy to get, but, still, that makes it hard to swap bodies.

You could, of course, swap bodies before the funeral home gets the body but after the identification has been made ... or after the graveside service. Posit a crooked gravedigger ...

Morning all. Morning here anyway. Been real busy lately for some reason. You know, sometimes you wake up here and the sun is shining, the birds are singing, and all after a good nights sleep. If it were not for the smell of burning feces and garbage, it would be real easy to forget where we are. Hope everyone is doing well. Things are good as can be here. THe army just keeps coming up with more dumb rules. Now we have to wear our flack vest and helmet in the compound, instead of just when we hit the road. who knows what's next. Take care all. I'll write when I can.

I think it was something about the way they obsessed on sharpening knives all the time. Maybe that was it.

You just gave me a near-panic-attack. What are the troops using to sharpen their knives? Good steel with a good edge should be carefully maintained, doing away with the need for drastic sharpening later. And the very best steels can only be sharpened with diamonds, but maintained with a leather strop or a ceramic stick.

I'm concerned that they might sharpen the single edge improperly, despite the warning that went with each knife. My collection of sharpening tools is second only to my gunsmithing tools. You can't have enough specialized tools, something I learned from my father.

Of course, I obsess about my rifles even more. "Every Marine a rifleman" is something the Army should have adopted. Shotguns need a bit of looking after, but I figure my Glock can pretty much give an AK47 a run for its money in the amount of abuse it can take, and still function every time.
