You sound like my daughter!
She sees a hot springs resort in her future. ROFL!
I'll be sure to let you know when the geysers start.
I thought we were out of the Lassen magma area, but don't know for sure.
If this is just a part of the inland heating it could sure turn out to be good. I'd be the closest hot springs to Sacramento, I think.
Anyway, I've got a couple of strange SUVs heading up my road, so my answer may be near. Gotta go...

I decided to help Little Joe out, sent an email to USGS. Here is the response I received:
If I recall correctly, I did get a similar question from the northern
Sierra Nevada several years ago.
We cannot, of course, tell you with 100 percent certainty what has
happened
to turn your well into a "geothermal resource" virtually overnight.
However, in theory it isn't much of a stretch to say that you have
probably
had a minor shifting of the rock structure and fractures. There may
have
been a low intensity earthquake or series of earthquakes that opened
rock
fractures, creating a hydrologic connection between your well and a
hydrothermal zone.
I just checked the USGS earthquake map for northern California and
there
was a 3.2 event last Monday (Jan 19 7:21:46 PM (PST)) several miles
east of
Quincy (105 miles north of Sacramento).
Coordinates 39 deg. 58.1 min. N (39.968N), 120 deg. 44.8 min. W
(120.747W)
You probably didn't notice it. There were no other events on the map
in
the area for the past week. See:
http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/latest.htm I did a quick search for other events during the years 2002 -2004 (39.5
to
40.5 N, 120 to 121 W) at:
http://quake.geo.berkeley.edu/ncedc/catalog-search.html It turns out that there is about one event per week, on average. The
largest event reported was 3.21 on December 31, 2003 in almost the same
location.
2003/12/01 23:14:53.88 39.9597 -120.7383 8.90 3.21
I've attached a list in a Word File.
Although this is not a seismically active area when compared to many
other
parts of California, it does suggest that my minor event hypothesis is
at
least a possibility. You are located just south of the Lassen volcanic
area so hydrothermal conditions could be expected.
I hope this helps answer your question. There is no way to predict how
long you will have hot water in your well. If you have neighbors with
wells you might want to check with them to see how widespread this is.
Another seismic event may seal off the fractures feeding hot water to
the
well- or not.
If you decide to just live with the higher temperatures you might want
to
have the water tested for key trace elements if used for drinking
water.
The elevated temperatures will increase geochemical activity, possibly
dissolving minerals.

Walt Swain

Leave it to you to zero in on the most bizarre possibilities.

But you're right; this could be hughly series.

Thanks for writing to an expert, who actually did some looking. Apparently such events are not al lthat uncommon, and he had a ready explanation for the occurrence...one proposed by several folks in the original thread.
I imagine we'll here from our friend soon. Maybe he had to go to work. Some folks actually do.

I don't know what to think, I checked the guy's previous posts and he appears to be an anti-war on drugs libertarian. The Black SUVs may be a joke.

At the time he made the post it seem legit. I just wonder why he would do this. Maybe someone should knock on his door to see if all is well. Boy would he be surprised.
