When he was on the show Sliders, John Rhys-Davies fought to make his character a role model rather than being amoral and power-hungry. I love that episode of slider's where his character points out that every generation dreams of freedom, but only one wrote the Declaration of Independence. (in that episode they visited a police state that loss the Declaration of Independence / Constitution.)

I hated it when they killed off the Professor. And, that was before I even knew Mr. Rhys-Davies's politics.

I always enjoyed his portrayal of Professor Arturo on Sliders, as well as his guest appearances as Da Vinci on ST:Voyager. They would have been better off letting Leonardo captain the Voyager, and leave Janeway on the holodeck...
A fine actor, and refreshing to hear for a change, one who is well-grounded in reality.
