In short, put Bradshaw, McNabb, Staubach, Tarkenton, McMahon, Marino, Montana, Vick etc on this team and see how far they go.

everyone loves a gunslinger, but last I checked, the last three champs (tampa, new england, baltimore) were defense-oriented.

don't forget, guys named dilfer, brady, and hostetler have as many superbowl wins as brett favre.

this isn't to say they're his equal, but if favre doesn't win in 1997, he's accomplished about as much in the postseason as, say, randall cunningham.

but it was silly of me to think the idol worship would end when he lost a playoff game in Bobby Hebert fashion.

even if the eagles lose on sunday, mcnabb led a bunch of role-players farther this year than brett favre has led decent stars in the past 5 years.

I assume you mean perennial MVP candidate Donovan F. McNabb, and not Randall Cunningham.

As of the 1996 playoffs, Favre had already set a number of post-season QB records. This was his 6th year in the NFL -- a career which included a wasted rookie season in Atlanta. The Packers, incidentally, had been losers for the 20 years -- 20!! -- prior to Favre showing up. Pretty impressive -- unless you're inclined to attribute the Packers almost unparalleled success over the past 10 years to Edgar Bennet or Ron Cox.

If you mean simply winning the big one, well, I believe it was you yourself who sited the distinction between pre- and post-free angency. The year after the Pack's SB victory (I'm sure you've heard stories of these), the chiseling away began.

And what's this "IF Favre doesn't win in 97" business? How about this instead: "IF" the MacNabb-led Eagles had won the Superbowl in either of the past two years or had even gotten there, I would believe the McNabb-led Eagles might someday win it again.

Instead, I think the McNabb-led Eagles will over the years become very fond of that most useful little word "IF".
