An Open Letter to Britney Spears

I am seeing a lot more vitriol against Spears these days. I don't quite understand it. Why not rage against the media machine that keeps her images front and center. Do you think she calls Rolling Stone and demands to be put on the cover? Did she drop Wolf Blitzer a line to tip him off about her farcical nuptials?

The kid may or may not be messed up. She may or may not be the antichrist, if some comments here are any indication. But the strong emotions against her, I think, are misplaced. Clearly, other people are paying millions of dollars to remain informed about her (or "entertained" by her). Rabbis writing open letters criticizing her while praising Michael Jackson appear at best to be foolish, and at worse, irresponsible themselves.

She's hellbent on aping her idol, Madonna with predictable results, and aside from what seems to be nonstop public humiliation, she's getting publicity she couldn't buy. Her agent and manager must be rubbing their hands with glee.

He befriended Michael Jackson and then, when they drifted apart, wrote nasty, judgmental pieces about him for publication. Now he seems to have skipped the part about getting to know his targets.

I'm being judgmental here as well, I know, but I don't think a career as a celebrity rabbi is worth publicly humiliating other people. In my opinion he should criticize individuals in private and, in my opinion, confine his attacks to sociatal trends rather than specific, possibly troubled, human beings.
