I need help with "View Partial Source" download.

Posted on 01/09/2004 7:03:10 AM PST by cantfindagoodscreenname

I want to post an article, but not the advertisements, so I decided to go find that nice little utility I had ages ago that will give me the "View Partial Source" choice in my "View" pulldown menu. I am using Windows Explorer 6.0 and the only download I could find was for 5.0. I downloaded it hoping that it would work. It's not showing up on my menu. Is it because I can't use the 5.0 version? I reset my computer and that didn't do it.

Can anyone help?

Is this an acceptable vanity? I never know! I read last night's posts about vanities and I'm hoping that this meets the guideline requirement that all "Vanities should be limited to the mission of Free Republic." If I get this vain question answered, I'll be able to post an article.\! LOL

Thanks!

Did you install it after you downloaded it? Also, for me, it doesn't show up as a menu item. It appears when you highlight just the text you want, then click with your opposite mouse button. (A short menu appears and View Partial Source is one of the menu items.)

It's there. Select the text you want, then right-click over it. Then you'll see "View Paritial Source." You will not find it on the "Edit" menu.

Mozilla works the same way.

Go back to Microsoft's website, and look at the bottom of this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp

Look in the menu on the right for "Downloads" and select the one which says "Internet Explorer 5.x Downloads".

Then select "Web Accessories".

It will take you to this page:

Microsoft Web Developer Accessories

Microsoft Web Developer Accessories

These two tools help the Web developer or those who are just curious about how pages are coded. The DOM tree tool lets you view all the Document Object Model properties in tree form via a right click of the mouse or from the Tools menu. And for those who are tired of scrolling through hundreds of lines of HTML to find that one section of code that does what you want, search no more! Simply highlight the area of Web page that you want to see the source for, right-click on it and select View Partial Source. It's that simple! Not supported by Microsoft. Download it now.

You can view (full) source, select all and copy, then paste into a text editor like Word. Then delete everything that doesn't look like article, and paste the remainder into the posting window. And then preview because sometimes table or other necessary formatting commands were in the deleted part and you should start over.

I'm not aware of any ad-killing source-view software or command.

Well, that is what the poster wants to avoid, having to view all source code when he just wants a snippet. Microsoft provides for a cool web accessory which allows for the viewing of a partial source. But for some reason it isn't working for him or her.

cantfindagoodscreenname: The 5.x web accessories work fine with IE 6.0. You might want to re-download it, and perhaps turn off any anti-virus software when downloading, too.

Oops. Forget the part about 'bottom of this page.' The menu is on the left!

THAT was my problem! I was highlighting and then looking under the "View" menu. I should have done the right click thing. I couldn't find any instructions at the site where I downloaded it.

Thank you to you and everyone else!

That was it! I thought I had to highlight and look under my "View" menu. Thank you!

lots of sites contain a 'print article' link/button which gives you the clean text for posting/printing purposes.

Where is the website where the article is posted?

Hey there! It's at the Boston Globe website. There was a discussion this morning on our local talk radio station about the gay marriage stuff going on in Massachusetts. I guess the anti-gay marriage folks (I'm on their side, btw) commissioned Zogby to do a poll in MA and then they only reported select parts of the poll. So, Zogby came out and talked about it and the Globe reported that. I haven't read the article, so I don't know the details. (I hope I don't get raked over the coals for paraphrasing here....sheesh). In any case, I searched FR for the story and couldn't find it. But, I thought it would be interesting to get some feedback on the whole idea of polls and whether it's ever OK to only report parts of a poll.

That's probably more than you wanted to know, lol.

I was going to give you the link, but it appears that the search feature on the site is down. I'll try posting it later.

I didn't know that! Thanks! I'll look for that from now on.
