Knicks Fire GM Scott Layden, Replace Him With Isiah Thomas
DECEMBER 22ND, 2003

The New York Knicks have reportedly fired President and General Manager Scott Layden and replaced him with Hall of Fame point guard Isiah Thomas.

The team has not confirmed the reports, which have come from multiple broadcast and print outlets, but it has scheduled a 3:30 news conference to make an announcement.

Layden joined the team in 1999, replacing Ernie Grunfeld. The Knicks, who have the NBA’s highest payroll, have struggled during Layden’s tenure, failing to make the postseason the last two years.

The team currently sits in tenth place in the Eastern Conference with a 10-18 record.

Layden’s two biggest moves as GM were last year’s four-team trade that sent fan favorite Latrell Sprewell to the Minnesota Timberwolves in return for Keith Van Horn, and his 2002 draft day trade that netted the Knicks Antonio McDyess. McDyess broke his kneecap in the preseason last year, and missed all of the 2002-03 season.

After his long playing career in Detroit, Isiah Thomas served in the Toronto Raptors front office before coaching the Indiana Pacers for three seasons.

For the latest on Scott Layden’s firing, as well as the rest of the day’s sports news, tune in to “Sports On 1: The Last Word” on NY1 tonight at 11:30 p.m.

Not that I'm a fan of this doofus, but how does Don Chaney keep his job?! I have no choice but to believe that he has compromising photos of the Dolans with farm animals, or something of that nature...

Losing Camby for Van Horn, and trading a lottery pick for McDyess and Allan Houston's salary cap-choking long-term contract and paying Charlie Ward more than $1.50 a season and the constant contract extensions that Chaney inexplicably gets... Yeesh!

Isiah Thomas? GM of the Knicks? Say it ain't so!! Willis or Walt, yes, but Isiah? Well, that cuts it. I formally relinquish any and all allegience to the NY Knicks from my childhood and embrace the Memphis Grizzlies. Jerry West may just be on to something here.

Two generations of Knick fans in our my family (OK, just my dad and I) gave up and renounced them about 2.5 years ago when Wart, Houston and, to a lesser extent, Thomas (Kurt Thomas) showed the world that they're low-rent Jew-haters, and management did nothing about it.

Ah, for the days of Earl Monroe, Walt Bellamy, Dave DeBusschere, and Bill Bradley. ;)

You got that right. The Knicks just violated the First Rule of Holes: When you find yourself in one, stop digging.

Well, mine too. :) But those were some good and classy players. Bernard King, too.

Hell, YEAH! But I have to admit that my favorite Knick was always John Starks -- followed closely by Charles Oakley. :)

As a Piston fan I love Thomas. Still, I don't think he distinguished himself when he headed up the Toronto organization so I don't know what the Knicks see in him as GM. I would have been far less surprised had he been named coach.

I grew up in Scarsdale (only 26 miles from Manhattan) and my wife is the first in 4 generations not born in Brooklyn. I had to make a major sacrifice when my company reloacted from midtown (45th and 6th) to Memphis, TN. By that time we were living in central Jersey. I was forced to give up my two hour commute (each way) to move down here. Now I'm 3 1/2 miles from my office and my children know what I look like. They don't know squat about ethnic food down here (1 bagel place, no decent delis, Pizza Hut is the recommended pizza place) but they kick butt on barbecue. Best (pork) barbecue place in Memphis, Corky's, is owned by a nice Jewish family. Go figure.

I have nothing against Isiah Thomas as a person. As a former player for Detroit, however...... ;^>

I can't root against the Knicks anymore with Isiah there. I have some great memories of the Bad Boys Piston teams of the late 80's.

Isiah, Laimbeer, Dumars, Mahorn, Rodman when he was somewhat sane, John Salley, James Edwards, Vinnie Johnson, Aguirre(and Dantley before him). What a team.

Layden hasn't been there 8 years -- more like 4.

I've been rooting against the Knicks since April or May 2001.
