...and a little extra...plus standard emergency gear...flashlight, knives, water, first aid, gas mask if you have one...good to have a cut-and-run survival kit these days...protein bars, pepper spray...
I have settled on the 9mm, .38/.357, .44 Magnum, and 12ga.3"...and for rifles...anything of average, widely used cartridge. If the mud does fly, you'll want to resupply if you run out...bad time for a .30 Luger, .219 Donaldson Wasp, and a 28 ga. !

I have settled on the 9mm, .38/.357, .44 Magnum, and 12ga.3"...and for rifles...anything of average, widely used cartridge.Sounds familiar. Late in life I started doing as some pragmatic old-timers suggested I do: I cut down on the different ammo and myriad brushes, jags, etc. by limiting myself to .22LR, .38/.357, 12 gauge and whatever CF rifle round struck my fancy (it happened to be .223 by default). Ammo is plentiful and cheap- and if I can't bag it with one of those four, I am - to repeat a phrase - in over my head to begin with.
I find that a Marlin 1894CS with a box of 158gr SJHP's is a dandy thing to have in the car (where the burgomeisters and margraves allow such a thing, of course).
